Nice report! An alternative model that prioritizes the well-being and interests of migrants should be developed and include: - incorporating migrant perspectives to develop better policies that reflect the realities on the ground and focus on migrant empowerment, protection, and human rights; - using the courts and civil society to question the legality of migration partnerships and to hold the EU and member states to their human rights obligations under international law; - making funding contingent on the protection of migrants’ rights; - refocusing migration funding to establish functional asylum systems so that asylum seekers can bring their claims safely to states, and to address structural issues which cause irregular migration - investing more in talent partnerships that take all skill types into account and lead to legal migration pathways; - creating and multiplying safe and legal migration pathways for education, employment, family reunification, and refugee resettlement.
CERC in Migration & Integration Research Fellow Oreva Olakpe, Ph.D and social development researcher Martha Sambe examine the state of EU-African partnerships and how they're managing irregular migration. Centering the needs of African migrants, they say, is imperative to effectively address cooperation challenges. 📰 Read Policy Brief 17: https://lnkd.in/gQ5xwZMw #euafricamigration #migrationresearch #euafricarelations

This week marks the start of International Development Week. This is an annual moment for Canada’s international cooperation sector to come together and review progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. At IJM, we work to protect people in poverty from violence and slavery and empowering survivors to lead change in their communities is at the heart of it. It involves dialogue and championing the voices of survivors in court, government meetings, justice system strengthening and local media. We believe that when Canada’s international development programs are built in partnership with and informed by the lived experience of vulnerable communities, they will result in sustainable and dignified solutions that protect people from violence. The article titled "Now you see them, now you don't: performance and the politics of localizing (forced) migration governance in the Horn of Africa's secondary cities," written by Dr. Caroline Wanjiku Kihato and Dr. Loren B. Landau, reflects on findings from critical and participant observations conducted between 2019 and 2023. These insights are part of the broader project Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF): Inclusive Urban Development and Mobility Action – a regional network and dialogue initiative financed by the European Union Trust Fund (EUTF) and implemented by Cities Alliance. This project aimed to address the challenges secondary cities in the Horn of Africa face as they grapple with the pressures of urbanization and increasing numbers of displaced persons. Focusing on cities including Arua and Koboko in Uganda, Assosa and Jigjiga in Ethiopia, Kakuma-Kalobeyei in Kenya, and Gabiley and Borama in Somalia, the project fostered the development of a network of cities that share best practices for integrating refugees and IDPs - https://lnkd.in/eg8WpMsQ The paper does not seek to evaluate the success or failure of the network. Rather, it explores how local policymakers in these secondary cities have navigated the complexities of displacements and inclusion, all while operating within often challenging local and national contexts. Thanks a lot to Loren B Landau Caroline Wanjiku Kihato. Building capacity to fulfill the two fold moral purpose of developing spiritual capacities and contributing to the wellbeing of humanity.
The question of international migration cannot be addressed in isolation from the broader relationship between the two continents. Any framework claiming to address migration cannot shy away from looking at the continuously widening economic disparity existing at the global scale, the generation, distribution and utilisation of wealth, the organisation of the world’s raw materials, or the coordination of markets. After all, it is impossible to minimise the drivers of migration while neglecting to reconsider economic processes that leave some countries with little chance to prosper. European policymakers in particular must reflect on the inadvertent effect of their policies, whether foreign, trade, investment or environmental, on the socio-economic conditions that drive the flow of individuals across borders.. Further, it is imperative to reframe the narrative around migrants from one that presents them as a burden or even threat, to one that emphasises the manifold contributions they make to the life of the societies to which they migrate.

Full time professor at the Faculty of Law "Iustinianus Primus" Skopje, Macedonia and former member of the Venice Commission
Happy to share that I am part of the successful TEPSA - Trans European Policy Studies Association Team that won the tender launched by the #EuropeanParliament for a 5-year framework contract to provide the Directorate-General for External Policies with external expertise on EU's external relations. My satisfaction is even greater because in all lots where I submitted documents for participation, the Tepsa Team is first ranked: 📌Lot 1 - Foreign Affairs, 📌Lot 2 - EU Enlargement, Eastern Neighbourhood, Northern policies, non-EU European countries, EEA and Russia, 📌Lot 4 - Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Aid and 📌Lot 7 - Human Rights. Being selected and ranking first is an incredible achievement for the whole Tepsa Team of experts. I am expecting a lot of successful work and analyzes that will help the #Europeaninstitutions to overcome many current problems and challenges in the EU. #EUchallenges #TogetherWeAreStronger #Scienceinaction #MacedonianAcademia

"Over one-third of all international migration in 2020 was between countries in the Global South." During UN Migration Week, Kerilyn Schewel discussed trends in migration between Global South countries as part of the launch of “The Palgrave Handbook of South-South Migration and Inequality."
