"AAC Clyde Space signed an agreement with the Scottish government to offer Earth observation data through the planned Cyclops satellite constellation. This is AAC Clyde Space’s first customer for the planned four-satellite constellation. The deal announced Tuesday is a pre-commercial agreement worth 612,000 pounds ($783,000). AAC Clyde Space developed the solution in response to CivTech, the Scottish government’s flagship innovation program for public/private partnerships. The agreement will focus on analysis and automating and integrating image data from the Scottish Forestry’s Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) and operations. The satellites data will focus on tree health to identify trees affected by pests and disease. The satellites in the Cyclops constellation will be the first 16U satellites built by AAC Clyde Space and introducing a new generation of Epic View satellites. Manufacturing for the first two satellites is underway and the first satellite is expected to launch in the first half of 2025. “The services we will provide from these ‘Made in Glasgow’ satellites epitomize the benefits of using data from space: a cost effective way of monitoring Scotland’s forests at a time of increased need. Teaming up with Scotland’s government early on has allowed us to develop data services that meet the high requirements of public organizations,” commented AAC Clyde Space CEO Luis Gomes." In the scope of the Greek National Small Satellite Program, the first contract has been signed with Open Cosmos, a provider of space missions and satellite data. The €60 million contract for the production of an Optical Constellation of satellites will be executed by Open Cosmos in close collaboration with the European Space Agency and the national Space ecosystem. The Constellation will consist of seven satellites which will supply daily high-resolution and very-high-resolution imagery. This flagship project forms part of the Hellenic Government's procurement of an advanced satellite constellation, demonstrating its commitment to delivering economic and environmental benefits for Greece and European citizens at large. The data collected from this constellation will be instrumental in improving public services such as the land registry, combating sea pollution, and increasing agricultural efficiency.

As we witness the rapid evolution of space technology and the burgeoning satellite industry, the management of space traffic has become an increasingly critical concern. With the recent acquisition of geospatial intelligence firm Orbital Insight by Privateer, a startup focused on satellite-tracking software, we are witnessing a convergence that could have profound implications for space traffic management and situational awareness. The integration of Orbital Insight's TerraScope Earth observation platform with Privateer's satellite-tracking software represents a significant step towards enhancing our ability to monitor and manage space traffic. This amalgamation of capabilities underscores the importance of end-to-end vertical integration and cross-functionality in addressing the challenges posed by the exponential increase in satellite launches and the proliferation of space debris. However, while technological advancements are crucial, they must be accompanied by a robust regulatory framework to ensure the responsible and sustainable use of space. The growing threat of space debris, which poses significant risks to satellite operations and space exploration, underscores the need for a normative order for space traffic management. To address this challenge, we must embrace innovative solutions that leverage advanced technologies and collaborative approaches. One such solution could involve the development of autonomous systems capable of real-time monitoring and collision avoidance, coupled with predictive analytics to anticipate and mitigate potential threats. Furthermore, establishing clear liability clauses and accountability mechanisms will be essential for incentivizing responsible behavior among spacefaring nations and commercial entities. This could involve the creation of an international framework for space governance, akin to existing norms in air traffic management and environmental protection. CRG is well-positioned to drive progress in this critical area. CRG’s seasoned SMEs and dedicated teams excel in providing comprehensive pre- and post-award support, from BD/Capture to program execution and beyond. 🛰 SPACE DEBRIS REMOVAL METHODS (1/6) 🛰 Over the next weeks I’ll discuss some of concepts that have been designed for the active removal of space debris. The attached video shows a concept that many people have come up with themselves when I explain that there are an estimated 36’500 uncontrolled objects larger than 10 cm orbiting Earth: can’t you just capture them with a net? Pros ✅ You can capture a wide variety of shapes, sizes and materials. ✅ You can capture objects from a large distance ✅ You don’t have to be super precise The upside of the net capture is that the servicer satellite doesn’t require very sophisticated sensors or precise measuring unit since capture by net doesn’t need that much accuracy. Next to this, you can capture many different targets without knowing their exact shape or size beforehand. This is a big 'pro', since we don’t know the configuration/shape of many objects in orbit. Cons 🚫 Hard to control object after capture 🚫 The thrust to decelerate both you and the captured object can burn the net 🚫 Hard to test the deploying of the net on ground The downside of the net capture is that once the object is captured, it will be hard to control. Decelerating both objects will give issues, as any thrust may burn the rope. Also, the captured object can bump into the servicer satellite when decelerating. Since its hard to test the microgravity conditions on ground, the team that deployed the mission in the video spent 6 years in parabolic flights and thermal vacuum chambers to test the deploying of the net. Recent mission In 2018 the RemoveDEBRIS mission led by the Surrey Space Centre was deployed from the ISS, demonstrating various debris removal technologies. The attached video shows it capturing a target CubeSat that was ejected at a low velocity and inflated a balloon to provide a larger target area and simulate an actual debris object. After it was captured, the rope was cut loose after which the object slowly spiralled into Earth’s atmosphere and burned up. Let me know in the comments what you think about this debris removal method! Next week I’ll discuss another method. #activedebrisremoval #netcapture #spacesustainability credits: SciNews on YouTube: RemoveDEBRIS’s net captures space debris ——————————————————————— Hi, I’m Liam, a space sustainability enthusiast.
