For a great example of the power of the pause, borrow from David Tennant. Hosting duties at an awards ceremony is fraught with tension. Will the jokes land? Will the audience laugh? Will a Hollywood star stride up and slap me? BAFTA have posted Tennant's opening monologue here, and while I'm not suggesting you fill your next business presentation with gags and a sparkly jacket, do remember the power of the pause. There are moments here (like the AI joke halfway through) where nerves combined with audience silence would push a lesser presenter to rush onwards. It takes guts to pause. Silence is scary. But the reward is huge - it gives your audience a chance to 'get it'. And that's true of any message, not just jokes. It also makes the presenter look comfortable and confident. So raise your presenting game from amateur to A-list - embrace the silence! #publicspeaking #presenting https://lnkd.in/et4_TzCB

Usher is a very wise man. He understood that showcasing someone else's gifts/talents takes Absolutely nothing from you. I wish more people realized this truth. He had the Super Bowl stage and could have kept it all to himself. This man shared it with five other artists! Alicia Keys, H.E.R., Ludacris, Lil Jon and Jermaine Dupree... All while shining a positive light on his hometown the "A". We have got to do better... #Justthinkingoutloud #sharingiscaring

WEEKLY WRAPPED WISDOM! I come across such interesting finds in the week. I've decided to share my top finds on a Friyay 💃 🏆 Trevor Noah winning an Emmy, need I say more? *goosebumps* https://lnkd.in/dPVRMmJS 💭 This post by Nadia Harris got me thinking about "professionalism". There was a time I questioned a colleague why he wore takkies to work. I remember saying "Do you see any VP's wearing takkies?" and his response was, "I will be the first!" He fetched my wig as Eusebius would say and Nadia Harris is collectively fetching all our wigs with this one! https://lnkd.in/d9xs8HDr 🎉 🙌 Loved this concept of the “honesty squad” by Sylvester Chauke and going against the norm. Such amazing ideas on being relevant to the time we’re in for Marketing and PR teams utilising nothing other than creativity: https://lnkd.in/d2z-2ci9 🎊 ✨ A closely related one by Sefiso Hlongwane, "Authentic influence emanates from expertise, credibility, and genuine advocacy—not merely from a celebrity’s fame or following" as he talks about authenticity in Marketing https://lnkd.in/dR23RKXa I think the theme for this week can be summed up in the word - AUTHENTICITY! #weeklywrappedwisdom #finds #excitingideas #thingsiloved #switchedon #thinking #newworldorder #changeisgood #thoughtleadership

Helping Extraordinary People Become Extraordinary Speakers | Public Speaking and Interpersonal Communication Coach
In 2014, I directed Arthur Miller's ALL MY SONS at the University of South Alabama. As is the case with everything I direct, I started first with a metaphor to hold the story together. That metaphor was a pride of lions. I won't go into detail about how I arrived at this visual, but to date it is one of the most exciting and successful containers I've ever used to bind the different elements of theatrical storytelling together. It provided a consistent vocabulary for communicating intentionally with designers, actors, and technicians. It was not for the audience to know. There were no lions on stage, or used as marketing visuals, or announced before the beginning of the show. No one came up to me afterward and said, "Cool lion theme." It was for me and the production team. And it is one of the most important things you can do as a successful public speaker and presenter. Choose a theme, a metaphor, or a question which influences and informs your story, content, and action ask. It will motivate your decisions, guide you when you're stuck, and ensure your audience experiences a cohesive message. Too often public speakers leave to chance valuable moments which are well within your control. The great ones, however, pick a container to guide the work. Happy Monday :) #effectivecommunication #publicspeaking #communication #communicationstrategy #metaphor #question #speakintoaction #theatre #directing #allmysons #universityofsouthalabama

Really enjoyed Rodd Chant ®©'s live event today. Was great to spend time with other creatives & chat through what it takes to make a living through our ideas & imagination. Some highlights: - 20 ideas a day to stay sharp. As creatives, we’re paid to think, not just write/record/produce. - Stay inspired, our jobs reply on it! - Don’t know how to do something? Just jump in & wing it. Comfort zones are the #1 threat to creatives. - Side projects help you stand out. They’re not frivolous, they're fun! - Find other creatives to jam ideas with - chefs, street artists, painters, carpenters etc. The weirder the better. - 90% of success is just showing up.
