The first Disability Pride Day in Boston and the inaugural parade in Chicago paved the way for nationwide events, empowering individuals with disabilities to take pride in who they are. Despite progress, employment disparities remain stark: 65.8% of those without disabilities are employed compared to just 22.5% with disabilities. Celebrating Disability Pride Month isn't about celebrating disabilities themselves but rather honouring the individuals who live with different abilities and recognising their achievements, efforts and contributions. It is a platform for them to share their stories and inspire others who may be in similar situations. July month raises awareness about the challenges faced by differently abled individuals and the need for accessibility and inclusivity. It educates the people around on how to support and advocate for equal rights.  It highlights the importance of designing spaces, policies and systems that are accessible to all. This month celebrates the diversity within our communities and recognises that every person’s unique experiences and perspectives enrich society. It provides opportunities for people to connect, share experiences and support one another. For individuals who are differently abled, this month encourages self-acceptance and pride in their identity. It helps them embrace their uniqueness and find confidence in who they are. Most of us have no idea what it feels like to be glued to a wheelchair, a bed or be differently abled, but to all those who are facing the world bravely with limited and restricted abilities, I wish you lots of strength to keep it going. May there be enough advancements in medical and technological research to help your cause and may there be people in your life who will lift your spirits when you feel low. Access to valuable resources like healthcare professionals on a telemedicine platform can provide support and information to those navigating the challenges of different abilities. She played a crucial role in the passage of groundbreaking legislation such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Judy's advocacy emphasized the importance of accessibility, equality, and human rights for all. As we celebrate Disability Pride Month this July, it's a reminder of how far we've come and how much further we need to go. In 2024, we have made significant strides towards inclusivity and accessibility, but there is still much work to be done. While the rights of these 1.3 billion people were only recently protected in international law and we still need: - More robust enforcement mechanisms in more countries - Better integration of disability rights principles into national laws - Increased awareness and education about disability rights - MORE legal instruments addressing specific aspects of disability rights The treaty that did so, the UNCRPD (United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities), is the first legally binding treaty specifically for people with disabilities. An overdue landmark in commitment toward global inclusivity. After its record negotiation between 2002 and 2006, and enforcement in 2008, it became the first legally binding treaty specifically for people with disabilities. It's a crucial framework for countries to protect rights in areas such as accessibility, education, employment, and health.
