With people, talent and skills shortages holding South Africa back - being 'Disability Confident' in recruitment just makes economic and ethical sense. Meet Lydia Abenaitwe, our Program Officer - Inclusive employment as she shares some cool insights about her work at Light for the World. "I find deep inspiration for this work in my personal journey as someone with a disability. I fervently belief that the right to dignified employment and economic empowerment, is everyone's right, whether they have a disability or not. I envision a collaborative endeavor where the hiring of persons with disabilities, isn't an act of sympathy but a recognition of their unique skills and capabilities, contributing to the resolution of significant challenges." Recognizing employers' fears and misconceptions, the inclusive employment office actively dispels these myths, through disability awareness trainings. We guide employers on inclusive hiring and we have seen a number of success stories yield from this practice. We applaud companies like Stanbic Bank Uganda, Uganda Breweries Limited, Centenary Bank, MTN Uganda, Makerere University Business School and many more who have deliberately, searched, utilized and appreciated the potentials of people with disabilities. I have been a strong believer of 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘺, and we definitely don't have a choice to be disabled or not. The theme for this year’s Nigeria Diversity and Inclusion Conference 2024 is - Disability Inclusion in Corporate Sustainability- Despite the opportunities available for persons with disabilities to participate actively in the private sector in Nigeria, the community still continues to be marginalised. Unemployment rate for persons with disability is more than double that of non-disabled people, at about 77%; access to inclusive services and products remains a huge challenge; there is huge exclusion from the existing value chain that powers the market systems. #Disability Awareness It is not about complaining or feeling pity for ourselves and seeking hand overs but sharing the reality about the challenges people living with disabilities are facing and encountering. We need our voices be heard and encouraging others to speak out. Mostly the ones with degrees, diplomas and the ones who are willing to further their studies.
