Disability awareness trainer for businesses & public speaker on disability, inclusion & mental health. Member of @speakers.collective. Inclusive workplaces | Public speaking | Award winning former co-chair of Ability EY
All disabilities are valid - including the invisible ones like deafness. Even if you don't have an obvious visible difference (hidden mental illnesses, long-term health conditions etc.), we all need access, support and empathy. Receiving that support and empathy has made a world of difference to me. Not everyone has empathy by the bucket load, but you can work on it intellectually to become a kinder and more compassionate human. Trust me, it’s not that difficult to be kind! Having allies who are supportive and compassionate is vital and I consider myself very lucky to have some great allies (professionally and personally) in my life. These allies are a crucial step in helping me become proud of my disability and in being my authentic self. Part of the training I deliver is about ‘not all disabilities being visible’ and how you can be an empathetic, supportive ally in the workplace. If you’d like to improve your workplace culture or understanding of disability, please book me to speak at your next event or, better still, book me to run a bespoke training session and let’s spread some kindness and compassion. You can reach me here, on LinkedIn or via my website https://lnkd.in/eykNNXQD #disabilityawareness #Disability #DisabilityInclusion #DeafAwareness #HRCommunity #HR Image description: Black and white photo of a person with long brown hair, smiling directly at the photographer. Beyond Support: Rethinking Care In the field of intellectual disability support, we often talk about person-centred care, but are we truly considering the dynamic and evolving needs of the individuals we support? A holistic, trauma-informed approach requires us to not only focus on immediate challenges but to understand how the person’s environment, social relationships, and sense of autonomy impact their overall well-being. Too often, support plans are outdated or fail to reflect the real-time changes in behaviour, mental health, and personal goals. The gap lies not just in resources, but in training and equipping staff with the tools to assess these shifting needs effectively. This highlights the importance of continuous professional development and multidisciplinary collaboration to ensure that support plans are living documents—ones that evolve with the person, not just about them. As support workers, our role is not only to facilitate daily living but to empower individuals to lead lives of quality, where their choices are respected and their dignity upheld. This requires more than basic training—it demands an empathetic understanding of trauma, a commitment to consistency, and a drive to provide holistic support that spans physical, emotional, and social well-being. Are we, as a sector, investing enough in building a workforce that is both skilled and compassionate? Are we addressing the importance of ongoing education and reflective practice in improving the quality of care? It’s time to rethink our approach and ensure we are creating environments where those with intellectual disabilities can thrive. #PersonCentredCare #TraumaInformedSupport #EmpathyInCare #WorkforceDevelopment #SocialCareMatters #DisabilitySupport #QualityOfLife #NDIS #Accomodation #SIL #SDA

Asking your employee about their disability may be uncomfortable, but that’s exactly why you should do it 🧡 💡 The stigma surrounding disability gets stronger when we fail to acknowledge it. 💡 In my experience, the hardest part of any diversity and inclusion work is starting the initial conversation. 💡 You may not feel like you have all the right words. When someone asks me about my autism or ADHD, I care less about them using the correct terminology or psychological jargon, and more about the fact they’re asking how to support me in the first place. By simply starting the conversation about disability in your workplace, educating your employees and managers, that’s where real inclusion can begin in your community. ❗ If you’re looking for workshops or trainings on neurodiversity for your team, check out my services here: https://lnkd.in/dvcW-xsp #maskingintheworkplace #neurodiversity #accomodations #changemanagement #Inklusion #HR #Diversitet #LigeMuligheder #Ligestilling #Ligeværd
