Disability:IN's 2024 Disability Equality Index® report showcases notable improvements in disability inclusion practices among U.S. companies. "The report highlights a significant rise in diversity reporting, with 45% of companies publishing data that includes disability metrics, up from 24% in 2023. Additionally, 71% of companies ensure their digital products are accessible, compared to 64% last year. However, boardroom inclusion remains low, with only 11% of companies having an openly disabled director and a mere 3% reporting on disability at the board level." Disability inclusion isn't just a box to check; it's a core aspect of building a truly equitable workplace where everyone can thrive. One of the biggest keys to making progress is reporting, such as Google’s own Diversity Annual Report, that helps to measure the strides we’ve made, and the work that still needs to be done. External reports such as Disability:IN’s recently released 2024 Disability Equality Index, are also important, offering an opportunity to compare initiatives against some of the largest organisations in the world. With the 10th installment of this report, Disability:IN has expanded the scope of its report beyond the US to include businesses from countries such as the UK, Canada, Germany, India, Japan, and the Philippines. It’s invigorating to see the growth of disability inclusion illustrated in this global report, especially with regards to the explosion in adoption of disability-focused employee resource groups. As Disability:IN president and CEO Jill Houghton highlighted in a comment for Forbes, 98% of organizations surveyed support an internal community of disabled employees, like Google’s Disability Alliance. Compare that to 2015, where only 68% of organizations had an ERG for disabled individuals and it’s clear to see the progress being made.
