A few weeks ago we took the Mobile Changing Unit out to the Presa Community Center for their Back to School Glow Bash. We are always happy to extend the accessibility of community events by providing accommodations such as this one. Today, June 11th, we celebrate the inaugural International Day of Play and advocate for every city to develop A Plan for Play. A Plan for Play is a strategic and operational document that details how to maximize public play starting with, but not limited to, young people. You may ask why cities need to plan for something as spontaneous and voluntary as play, which surely sits down the priority list from affordable housing or climate emergencies. The answer is that as a society, we have largely forgotten the great value of public play. Play is good for: • brain health • body health • business health • social health For more on why cities need a plan for play read: https://lnkd.in/gTnYB6eC #InternationalDayofPlay #IDOP

Thank you to Dr Rhys Farthing, Global Research Director at Reset Tech for her insightful remarks in Parliament today. As she mentioned in her speech last week at ChildFund's 'Online Safety for Every Child' event at Parliament House, "Striking the balance between young people’s right to access the digital world and their right to protection from harm requires a lot from all of us, particularly from tech and government. We can’t reasonably expect young people to educate or protect themselves when we live in a world that has an inherently risky digital architecture. But we can add safety rails to the digital architecture itself and safeguard the systems that technology deploys to build a safer digital world.” The digital safety of children requires an approach that doesn’t just keep them safe, but one that preserves their digital rights. ⏩ Wow the options we have in our life. I would like to take a moment to celebrate all the options we have created for each other. It wasn't that long ago that, as a woman, as an immigrant, as a mama, my options would have been pretty limited. But, question - have we learned to take action on all these options that are available to us? Knowing how to recognize the options, give ourself permission to consider them, and take a step than two than three towards the new options, all while tracing a new & unproven path for ourself... is ... not easy. Our mind is highly skilled at making sure we stay in the same habits of thought and action because we know those help us survive. So... if we want to look at different options for our life, to go from survive to thrive, how in the world do we do it? Just like we have updates on our phones', we update our decision making programming. The options we decide to look at, the way we evaluate the options, and the actions we decide to take. If you would like to learn more, type YES in the comments :)

This afternoon I sat in virtually on the "Leveraging Digital Media to Promote Civic Dialogue" session at the Smithsonian National Education Summit. It was inspiring to learn about the Digital Democratic Dialogue Project where classrooms of high school students in different parts of the country join together to learn about each other with the goal of having civic conversations. https://lnkd.in/ei3Mq6WQ The presenters shared that a key to the success of the program is that they build in time up front for students to really get to know each other and talk about personal interests before diving into civic topics. This creates a safer space to open up and share thoughts. The "Dialogue Supports" mentioned in the session sound like ones we can all use in museum education classrooms and everyday life: When talking with someone, try using the "4 C's" for better conversations: Care Connection Community Curiosity Gratitude: What are you thankful your group member shared? Bridge: How did this make you think about similarities or differences between your life and your group member's life? Question: What do you want to ask your group member?
