It was an honor to participate in the planning of this inaugural conference. The video clips are inspiring and seeing/hearing presenters in Spanish and seeing La cultura representada y integregada en el evento warms my heart. This was very needed for those in the Latine community facing Alzheimer’s disease as a caregivers. The only thing I will say as someone on this journey with my husband is that it continues to be an “alone” journey. At the end, the phone number appears for the Alzheimer’s association and the phrase “no one should go through this alone” is repeated with the assumption that calling the Alzheimer’s association number will ensure you do not go through this alone. Unfortunately, the only real “service” available to caregivers are support groups, not the real, tangible help that only comes from policy changes ensuring that caregivers have the financial resources needed to care for their family member with the disease. Furthermore, if one is dealing with young onset or rare dementias, services and organizations fall short. May this event and video inspire advocacy and create visibility (not light) - the light is there - but we are not seen! Do care, and do what you can to support friends or family caring for someone with Alzheimer’s and advocate / support policies that create tangible help for families going through this! It’s easy to suggest to someone to join a support group or call a hotline number - it’s less easy to take action in support of this person. Be the person who takes tangible action to support a caregiver.

Having an impact in serving our communities doesn't just happen. It is created through meaningful collaboration, thoughtful strategic planning, and, most importantly, listening. It has been a privilege getting to combine these efforts with community leaders to establish the Illinois Chapter's inaugural Latino/a/e conference - Bringing the Light. The video below shows what came to fruition on the day of our conference - Light for our community being the center of it all. It could not have happened without a group of amazing local leaders: Antonia Gomez Connie Saldivar David X Marquez, PhD Elizabeth Gonzalez, CPP Ellisa Campos Florencia Carmona Israel Hernandez Jennifer Sandoval Judith Susan Rocha, Ph.D., LCSW (ella/she) Leticia Villarreal Sosa Lupita Vavalle Maria Velazquez Marta Cerda, J.D. Perla J. Castro We are deeply grateful to our vendors, volunteers, and the Instituto del Progreso Latino for creating a space for our loved ones and our community to gain valuable insights. (Thank you to Justin Lynk for the beautiful video of this important work!)
