"Representation of women in main cast is 50% compared to 42% when there are no women in above-the-line decision-making roles.
Similarly, when there's at least one black writer in the writers' room, black representation in main cast roles is 34% compared to 11% when there are no black writers"

Latasha Gillespie, Head of Global Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility at Amazon MGM Studios to BBC's Executive Lounge about leading the charge on inclusivity in entertainment! 🎬
Looking at this data what we can see is that in most TV programs design, concept and production, there is a clear lack of intersectional narratives and social representations that reflect in systemic exclusion and discrimination.
Gillespie emphasizes that DEI isn't just about optics; it's about driving tangible change both behind and in front of the camera. Her work centers in the strategic importance of diversity and inclusion in talent retention and management in entertainment.
📚 Under Gillespie's leadership, Amazon MGM launched its inclusion policy guide and playbook, setting a new standard for the industry. These resources, available to the public, offers a roadmap for organizations striving to cultivate diverse, accurate storytelling, but more importantly to hold themselves accountable for their commitment to diversity.
💡 Her approach highlights the business imperative of DEI, transcending token gestures to institute systemic change. And thinking on this, she reflects on this question "how do we ensure that we delight all our global customers by showing them stories about their love, joy and challenges in an authentic way?"
I would like to add to her statement that this is why Media is a massive and powerful channel in which narratives and inclusion can be challenged, and also, why role models that represent Latin Americans, People of colour, Women, LGTBIQ+, people with disabilities and more, are really important in TV series and movies.
We think in our clueless minds that we go for pure entertainment to watch TV series or to the cinema, but we are exposed to narratives, images, sound and concepts that has significance (Greimas) and influence our thoughts about abstract concepts and social constructed ideas.
What I just explain before is called in social psychology cognitive learning, we humans learn by observation not only as children but also as adults. So, be careful with what you watch, pay attention if you are giving support to industries that do not take diversity seriously but as a token.
