The property tax is the polticians' drug of choice. They can raise taxes without having to take responsibility for it! They simply institute a system that creates windfalls when markets rise, bringing in new tax revenues in amounts that have no connection whatsoever to changes in government expenditures. Of course, this system also causes revenue whiplash. And, this onerous system is particularly burdensome on those on fixed incomes (usually, the elderly), making your county tax collector the real owner of your property and the real source of financial distress on the middle class. Consider: if a first time buyer makes a 20 percent down payment on a house (having sacrificed to save the funds), your local tax collector immediately confiscates fully 10 percent of your equity in year 1 (with a 2 percent tax rate on the appraised value of the house), followed by additional confiscation each subsequent year, until (after several years), he has confiscated your entire initial equity, through the property tax. Or imagine a retired couple that, having faithfully paid their mortgage for 30 years, find that the county tax collector is taking 25 percent of their social security off the top, rising every time house prices rise (but their income do not). Look, we need resources to provide basic services (roads, schools, public health ...), but it is long past time to retire this antiquated and harmful system of official confiscation of middle class wealth. See what California voters did almost fifty years ago to save their homes from this unfair tax: it’s called Proposition 13. It has saved hundreds of thousands of people from losing their homes. The commercial real estate market is facing a reset, and assessed values on office buildings are being successfully challenged in many municipalities, resulting in significant value reductions and lower tax bills for property owners. As a result, questions are being raised about whether local jurisdictions are becoming more reliant on residential owners' property taxes, at least in the short to medium term. #officespace #commercialrealestate #propertytax
