The Boston Moral Reform Society did not have its own building until 1869. Until then, members brought women needing help into their own homes in the face of criticism from religious leaders in the community. Their first facility was named Talitha Cumi after a story in the New Testament — a statement against this kind of religious prejudice toward unwed mothers.
