The Boston Moral Reform Society did not have its own building until 1869. Until then, members brought women needing help into their own homes in the face of criticism from religious leaders in the community. Their first facility was named Talitha Cumi after a story in the New Testament — a statement against this kind of religious prejudice toward unwed mothers. Critical Dilemma Where Are Critical Theory and the Social Justice Movement Taking Us? Critical theory and its expression in fields such as critical race theory, critical pedagogy, and queer theory are having a profound impact on our culture. Contemporary critical theory’s ideas about race, class, gender, identity, and justice have dramatically shaped how people think, act, and view one another—in Christian and secular spheres alike. In Critical Dilemma, authors Neil Shenvi and Pat Sawyer illuminate the origins and influences of contemporary critical theory, considering it in the light of clear reason and biblical orthodoxy. While acknowledging that it can provide some legitimate insights regarding race, class, and gender, Critical Dilemma exposes the false assumptions at the heart of critical theory, arguing that it poses a serious threat to both the church and society at large. Drawing on exhaustive research and careful analysis, Shenvi and Sawyer condemn racism, urge Christians to seek justice, and offer a path forward for racial healing and unity while also opposing critical theory’s manifold errors. https://lnkd.in/gYnW_tjP

An important piece by Equality Act Review Researcher and Policy Analyst Zaki Rehman (DPhil Student at St John's College, Oxford), on the High Court ruling in support of banning religious prayer at the Michaela School. Zaki forensically examines the ruling identifying the crux of the matter; that British secularism is incoherent. This is a great start. It’s the foundation of a moral and orderly society. And claiming separation of church and state would be a profound display of ignorance. The Ten Commandments are not a religion or body of doctrine, but common sense natural law that maintains order, justice, and a measure of peace on earth among imperfect humans. It provides an authoritative baseline of good governance unlike anything else on earth. Rebuilding these foundations will bring some sanity back to our upside down world. https://lnkd.in/en-kszs6

Professor Marcia Langton's opinion piece today in The Australian, 'No excuse for allowing Jewish hate to fester on our campuses', raises several concerns about the portrayal of events at the National Anti-Racism Symposium hosted by QUT Carumba Institute and led by Dr Chelsea Watego. While I respect the importance of addressing anti-Semitism, I believe it's essential that opinions are grounded in accurate accounts of events. Langton would not have needed to qualify her statements with "if the reports are accurate" or “if reported accurately", had she simply of confirmed what took place with mob and Black media who were in attendance. The reports by mainstream media were contrived and not accurate. Langton's assertions regarding Sarah Schwartz’s presentation were completely erroneous. As somebody who attended all three days of the National Anti-racism Symposium, my view is that Sarah spoke against any reductive stereotyping of Jewish people, and never spoke of “good Jews” vs “ bad Jews”. Langton’s actions fuel abuse towards Jewish dissenters, much like her position on the parliamentary-regulated-Indigenous-voice-to-parliament created an environment of intense abuse toward those who maintained a Sovereign position throughout the referendum farce. #Carumba #QUT #UniteFightRace #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe #FreePalestine #Jagera #Turrbal #Power #Accountability #Strategise #Sovereignty #Responsibility #Mobilise #Mob #Treatyb4sport #Joy #Justice #Solidarity #Resistance #Connection #AntiRacism #AntiRacism #Solidarity #Decolonize #MovementBuilding #Justice #CommunityCare #ImmigrantOccupier #DecoloniseAspirations #AboriginalDiplomacy #TermsOfReference #Truth #Context

URGENT NEED FOR ACTION - HR6090 - the Anti Semitism Awareness Act/the Anti-Anti Semitism Bill. This law is an attack on the First Amendment giving the DOJ, other federal agencies and the DEI/ Civil Rights Monster even more authority. The law will more than likely increase negative views of Jewish Americans. HR6090 puts European style hate speech laws onto Americans. We don't need new laws. We need our current laws - which already make it illegal to discriminate against jews - to be enforced. The updated definition of antisemitism - created by the Holocaust Remembrance Alliance - is long with many examples such as: Accusing Jewish Citizens of being more loyal to Israel than their own nation. Claiming that the state of Israel is a racist endeavor. Questioning the Israel/Hamas war. Doesn't matter if you agree or disagree with these statements. What matters is under the First Amendment we are allowed to say them. This makes it illegal for Americans to criticize a foreign government. LAST BUT NOT LEAST - - it's illegal to say that the jews killed Jesus. "Technically" it was the final decision of Pontius Pilate. BUT - - will this make certain chapters of the Bible illegal? Will students be arrested for reading from John Chapter 8? First Thessalonians 2:14? Acts 3:14-15, Acts 4:10? The Vatican One version of mass before Easter says that the Jews turned their back on Jesus. Will they be arrested? This law will allow the machine to go after the faithful. Much like extending the FISA bill violates the 4th amendment allowing us to be spied on. This law requires the department of education to use this definition and ALL of its examples when enforcing title XI of the 1964 civil rights act which prohibits forms of racial & religious discrimination. School will be sued if they don't follow the heavy hand of the government. We are losing our moral rights - given to us by God - of Free Speech. This law hit the Senate on May 2nd. I encourage you to immediately contact your senator telling him to vote NO to this law. #votenoHR6090 #votenotocensorship #hr6090

TODAY: Join Sojourners for an online conversation: Eroding civil rights. Undercutting democratic norms. Endorsing violence to maintain power. Upholding white supremacy. Distorting faith for political gain. Every day seems to bring a new example of the threat of rising Christian nationalism – but how do we dismantle it? In this online panel from Sojourners magazine, Christian nationalism experts and faith leaders will explore the hopeful actions that can counter this deadly set of beliefs. Panelists will explain what Christian nationalism is (and isn’t), offer examples of actions to help end it, and articulate a path forward that neither stifles the participation of people of faith in public life nor threatens a vibrant, democratic, and just future for all. 84% of the world population - or 8 in 10 people - identify with a religious community. Therefore, it is no surprise that religious beliefs often shape political engagement, influencing everything from the candidates people vote for to the policies they support or oppose. Religious actors—beyond just formal religious leaders— play crucial roles in many civic spaces across the world. Their involvement in elections or the daily governance of a country is complex and can not be easily categorized as net positive or negative. This is a reality that stakeholders must engage with rather than dismiss or wish away. Our latest policy paper, Faith in Policy – Right-Sizing Religious Actors’ Role in Democratic Processes, draws from case studies and provides actionable recommendations for donors, policymakers, and practitioners on how to constructively engage religious actors in democratic processes. 🔗 Explore the lessons in the policy paper: https://lnkd.in/e3pyS-P4
