Does your resume design matter? Does the visual look of your resume really make a difference? The answer is a resounding YES. We all know the saying, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” Although the numbers vary from milliseconds to 30 seconds, research backs this up. As a benchmark, it is fair to say the people we meet form an opinion of us within 7 to 15 seconds. And guess what? According to some research, appearance alone is responsible for the vast majority of that first impression—as much as 70% or even more. We all know that we shouldn’t “judge a book by its cover,” but like it or not, that is precisely what we all do. Appearance does matter! So, consider this: your resume is the cover of the book that is you. It is your calling card. Most prospective employers and recruiters will see your resume before meeting you in person. I'm going to end the 1 page vs. 2 page resume debate right here: Asking: "How long should my resume be?" Is the wrong question. The correct question is: What is the information a company needs to know about me to be confident I am the right candidate? The answer to that question shrinks your resume dramatically. The bottom line is that most people put too much information on their resumes. Companies don't want a comprehensive view of your background - they want a summary of exactly what makes you a fit for what they are hiring for. Sure, sometimes that can go to a second page. If it's a great resume, that doesn't matter. But if it's a poor resume, where the reader has to sift through to find the important information, a 2-page resume is going to be an opportunity-killer. Focus on making your resume a sales page, not a Wikipedia page. And to create a powerful resume, I recommend using the GLORY Formula. I've literally screened thousands of resumes for clients. Below are six fatal mistakes killing your resume: - Resume = job description ❌ - Adjectives, adjectives, and adjectives ❌ - Missing numbers, dates and facts ❌ - Canva'ing your resume ❌ - TMI (Too Much Information) ❌ - Lawd Almighty - Check your spelling. (If you can’t spell the degree or the position you held, it’s a bright red flag. 🚩❌ *I’m looking at all you “ Sioux Chefs” out there!   Do these instead: - Remove responsibilities and add accomplishments: Responsibilities stay with anyone doing the job; accomplishments only stay with you. ✔️ - Adjectives are immeasurable and fluffy. Keep them off your resume. ✔️ - Instead, add numbers and facts. They're both louder and clearer than adjectives. ✔️ - I love Canva too, but not for resume writing: Fancy design and colors, left-right split, and skills sections with scores sacrifice readability, space, and your candidacy. ✔️ - The hiring manager is eager to know who you are, but only after resume screening. Save your life story for later and only share relevant information for the job. ✔️ - Be truthful - If you begin our relationship with a fictional resume, I’ll assume you’re untrustworthy.✔️ “Fake it till you make it” isn’t fair to either you or your future employer. Be honest about your skill and your willingness to learn & see how far you go!
