The rollout of the Clean Heat Market Mechanism (CHMM) is facing a delay until April 2025, a year later than initially anticipated. This government initiative aims to boost competition and lower prices for clean heat technologies by setting a market standard for heat pumps in relation to fossil fuel boiler sales. Criticism of the broader efforts to decarbonize heat has been highlighted in a report by the National Audit Office. The report points out that certain aspects of the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero’s (DESNZ) overall strategy are still unclear, especially in regards to the role of hydrogen in home heating. Additionally, DESNZ needs to address long-term challenges such as the future of the gas network and plans for decarbonizing harder-to-reach homes. The report also notes that DESNZ has been slow in encouraging households to adopt heat pumps due to high costs and low awareness.

Are we on track to decarbonize Canada's buildings? Heat pump sales are expected to increase in the coming years—but not nearly fast enough. In fact, to meet our 2050 target, heat pumps sales will need to be three times higher than current projections by 2026. The next few years are critical, as they determine the pace for adoption for the next two decades. The transition must accelerate to improve the chances of successfully reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. Learn more in our Pace of Progress report: https://lnkd.in/ga_fb7HR
