Preventing Crime, Promoting Trust: We stand with the Texas Criminal Justice Coalition in the belief that prevention is pivotal. “Haunted Texas” will actively support diversion programs for at-risk youth and collaborate with law enforcement to build bridges of trust between them and the communities they protect. “Haunted Texas” is more than a name; it’s a commitment to our county’s prosperity, security, and heart. In 2018, we started producing Community Profiles for all 171 school districts in Kentucky. The objective was, and still is, to get key data into the hands of community members as a way to encourage them to be part of the solution to improving education outcomes. With data, communities could be part of designing solutions to the unique needs of families and students locally. This week we released the 4th edition - now called Groundswell Community Profiles. They include data along the "path to a larger life", coupled with trend data and a snapshot of demographic differences, and socioeconomic information to contextualize the environment. It's a brief 4-page snapshot. The Groundswell Community Profiles are meant to be used as a starting point to spur larger conversations and action. When we bring communities to the table, in hyper-local settings, with shared aspirations, innovative solutions will be found. On June 30th, I will be visiting South Carolina's CAMP BURNT GIN -- an S.C. Department of Health & Environmental Control-funded overnight summer camp in Sumter County for children, teens, and young adults with physical disabilities and chronic illnesses -- to learn more about this wonderful and unique place, which I have been told has a tremendous origin story that I look forward to hearing about "live." This visit is chance to: 1. Understand the camp and its campers' needs during emergencies; 2. Help the camp and its campers understand the role of Mobile Medical professionals in maintaining their health, safety, and wellbeing; and 3. Introduce the camp community and Responders across SC to the R.U.S.H. Initiative -- "Rare & Under-Served Health" -- whose mission is to ensure that when you roll up to care for a child or young person in distress, you have critical clinical context about their special health needs and wishes, and the ability to share your insights with the next link in the patient's care chain, AT NO COST. (The R.U.S.H. Initiative's national training partner is SC's own Thorne Ambulance Service.) What could be better than these Children & Youth with Special Health Needs (CYSHNs) and their families feeling SO much more comfortable now that they've interacted with a firefighter, medic, or public safety officer outside of a moment of crisis? A Personal Note on Keeping Our Children Safe This Summer As the CEO of the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, I often share professional advice on child safety. But more importantly, as a mother and grandmother to two adorable little boys, I've lived these precautions every day. With summer upon us, many families are gearing up for camps and sleepovers, and it’s crucial to remember that you are your child’s primary advocate and protector. Last week, I had the privilege of speaking on the Morning on Merit Street about summer safety, where I elaborated on the following tips based on both my professional experience and personal practice: 1. For Camp Drop-offs: Ask About Ratios: What is the camper to counselor ratio? Inquire About Safety Protocols: What does the background check and training process for counselors involve? Understand Communication Protocols: How will you be notified if an incident occurs? 2. For Sleepovers: Know the Environment: Who else might have access to your child during the stay? Who might visit the house during the sleepover? Ask About Plans: Where will they go while your child is in their care? 3. Empower Your Child: Teach your children that if they ever feel uncomfortable, it's okay to speak up and remove themselves from a situation. Ensure they know how to reach you at any time and understand you are always available for them. These aren’t just professional tips; they’re actions I took to ensure the safety of my own children.
