✨ International day commemorating the victims of acts of violence based on religion or belief | 22 August 2024 ✨ Freedom of religion or belief, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to peaceful assembly and the right to freedom of association are interdependent, interrelated and mutually reinforcing. They are enshrined in articles 18, 19 and 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Upholding these rights plays an important role in the fight against all forms of intolerance and of discrimination based on religion or belief. The open, constructive and respectful debate of ideas, as well as interreligious, interfaith and intercultural dialogue, at the local, national, regional and international levels, can play a positive role in combating religious hatred, incitement and violence. Furthermore, the exercise of the right to freedom of opinion and expression and full respect for the freedom to seek, receive and impart information can play a positive role in strengthening democracy and combating religious intolerance. Second, on the relevance of this resolution. In conflict situations, as we’ve seen, religious minorities too often face persecution and intolerance, as experienced by the Yazidis in Iraq and the Baha’i in Yemen. Religious intolerance and persecution fuels instability, impacting both conflict prevention and resolution. However, when freedom of religion or belief is respected, and interreligious dialogue is promoted, we can build trust and understanding between communities, helping to secure sustainable peace. Yet think of Rev 17:17! https://lnkd.in/dhAngBea

We cannot let European memories of enslavement, colonialism, religious persecution, gender discrimination, and violence against ethnic minorities fade away. They teach us crucial lessons about how to address today’s threats, and serve as a poignant reminder to those shaping the future of Europe. In this #EUElection, we want to highlight European Sites of Conscience that are using the power of memory to confront religious, ethnic, and gender discrimination, and pursue truth and justice for all: Our Lord in the Attic (The Netherlands) Transatlantic Trafficked Enslaved African Corrective Historical (TTEACH) Plaques Project (UK) Asociación Pasaje Begoña (Spain) Museum of Free Derry (Ireland) Anti Apartheid Legacy Centre of Memory & Learning - The Liliesleaf Trust (UK) Srebrenica-Potocari Memorial Center and Cemetery (Bosnia) bit.ly/votewithmemory #VoteWithMemory. #EUelections2024 #EuropeanElections #VoteEU #EP2024 #UseYourVote

Freedom movements across various countries have been pivotal in the fight for independence, democracy, and human rights. India's struggle against British rule, led by figures like Gandhi, emphasized nonviolent resistance. The American Civil Rights Movement, with leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., sought racial equality. South Africa's anti-apartheid movement, championed by Nelson Mandela, fought against racial segregation. Poland's Solidarity Movement, led by Lech Wałęsa, challenged communist rule. The Vietnamese Independence Movement resisted French and American intervention. Each movement, despite differing contexts and strategies, shared a common goal: the pursuit of freedom, justice, and self-determination for their people. #IndependenceDay #FreedomFighters #HumanRight #CivilRightsMovement #contentmaker #articlewriting #contentwriting #contentdevelopment #contentmarketing #academiccontentwriting #BlackLivesMatter #AntiApartheid #FreeMandela #SolidarityMovement #PolishFreedom #VietnamIndependence #Gandhi #QuitIndia #GhanaIndependence #KwameNkrumah #AlgerianWar #AlgerianIndependence #CubanRevolution #FidelCastro #MauMauUprising #KenyaIndependence #IrishIndependence #MichaelCollins #TunisianRevolution #ArabSpring #IranianRevolution #AyatollahKhomeini #8888Uprising #MyanmarProtests
