Career Development + Leadership Coach, Furthering equity & inclusion in STEM careers I Workshop Facilitator + Keynote Speaker
It is #internationalwomensday ! And while that might be stating the obvious (given the plethora of posts I have seen), did you know the theme this year is Inspire Inclusion? This theme issues a call to action to celebrate diversity and empowerment of women....and this includes recognition that there is work to be done! We have a great challenge before us to further #genderequity in #technology careers: ➡️ Despite significant gains in STEM degree attainment, only 26% of the computing workforce is female. ➡️ Women are promoted at a slower rate than men, especially in technical roles where only 52 women are promoted to the level of manager for every 100 men. ➡️ Women of color are especially underrepresented in tech, especially in leadership positions. What can you do to support women in tech? Here are three steps to start: 💭 Reflect: consider whose perspective is being centered by cultural standards and definitions of what success or leadership looks like (interrogate the presence of bias!). Shift from cultural fit, to cultural add. 🙌 Connect & celebrate: look at your network and seek to include and celebrate the achievements of diverse women. Share your information widely and seek to provide sponsorship opportunities. 💛 Foster inclusion: actively ensure your interactions and the environment in which you work is inclusive and welcoming. Consider how you are representing and meeting the needs of diverse women and how you are contributing to an environment where everyone can thrive and feel belonging. 👉 Celebrating diversity and empowerment of women requires ACTION, every day. What will you do to answer the call?

Whilst tech is at the forefront of innovation, it falls short when it comes to Diversity and Inclusion. So let’s look at the numbers… ✊🏾 25% of Tech Employees are Ethnic Minorites, with 5% being Black. 👩🏿💻 As for gender minorities, 29% of tech employees are Women or Non-Binary, with this number shrinking exponentially with Black Women making up 0.7% of the IT workforce. 👨🦽 6% of tech employees are disabled. 🧠 Only 3% disclosed they are Neurodivergent whilst UK estimates for neurodivergence are 15 – 20%. Evidently, there is a conversation to be had. That’s why we’re putting together our next round-table on Scaling Diverse Technical Teams. Bringing together leaders within the tech industries, to discuss best practices, inclusion, hiring strategies and more. We’ll also be collating an expansive list of resources for both businesses and job seekers for guidance and support. Women are under-represented in tech - only 20% of software engineers are women or non-binary! So, what can be done? 1. Understanding Bias Matters. The first step towards making conditions in STEM more equitable for women is recognising there is a problem and understanding the role of implicit bias. 2. Representation Matters. Women who are in this STEM industry must be highlighted and talked about. 3. Mentorship Matters. Provide mentoring opportunities for female STEM employees to connect with other successful women in their organisation and industry. We're proud to be consistently 10-15% above industry diversity benchmarks but as businesses, there is always more that can be done, and we're looking forward to a session tomorrow as part of INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY (MARCH 8) to discuss this further. If you're looking to improve your workplace diversity, Tech Talent Charter have some fantastic diversity and inclusion resources for UK tech businesses. #InspireInclusion #IWD2024
