I recently read the latest The Chronicle of Higher Education newsletter written by Karin Fischer and have a few thoughts on the topic... When colleges face financial struggles or closures, the impact on their communities can be immense. Colleges often provide more than education—they’re hubs for #healthcare, #utilities, and #community spaces. But what happens when those services vanish? This is where change management plays a vital role. A skilled change manager can: + Facilitate early communication: Ensuring transparency between colleges and local stakeholders to build trust and create collaborative solutions. + Develop transition strategies: Helping institutions plan for continuity of essential services like health centers and utilities, minimizing community disruption. + Strengthen resilience: Guiding colleges to invest in sustainable, community-focused initiatives before challenges become crises. By anticipating challenges and fostering partnerships, change managers help colleges navigate transitions while empowering communities to adapt and thrive. That's enough of my two-cents. I found this an interesting perspective that ties two things together that I care about - change and higher education. Having spent the first part of my career in higher education, as well as spending the last part of my high school years in a college town, I have seen not only the impact of higher education on young adults, but also on communities. This article speaks to when a college or university closes. Barbara Traitlein calls out some ways that change management can help. I would add to this that change management can also help with the employees who will be displaced as part of the transition process. Taking this in another direction - I believe organizational change management could help higher education institutions before they close. They are, in fact, organizations! Many are working on restrictive budgets, with old school mindsets…but I wonder if challenging the status quo, introducing how to manage change and working on flexible thinking wouldn’t get out there n front of some of the issues in the article? Maybe I’m a dreamer…but I would be interested in other’s thoughts.
