Go with your strengths. #IFoundLam when I used my experience in sales to cold call into the office. Two weeks later, I had a job offer. This is my Lam Research Journey. #lifeatlam
In January 2022, I was getting a repair done on my wife's car. We had moved back to Ireland in 2021 having lived in California for 8 years, and had been given a car to get us around while we settled back into life in Ireland.
The car was older and good mechanically and electrically but needed a few things sorted out, so having dropped it into the repair shop, I decided to go for a walk.
Now giving a bit of a back story, I had studied Mechanical Engineering and had worked in the semiconductor industry for about 13 years when I was laid off (Involuntary Redundancy) which meant I had a lot of time on my hands. This was about a month after returning to part time study, where I focused on Computer Science, while being a full time dad.
This led to some part time work and my wife and I made the decision to move to California for further study. While studying there, a chance meeting with a local businessman brought me into a full time role in my previous employer. As an engineer, I enjoyed getting to work with different companies, both local and multinational, being involved in designing and building technology that is only now finding its way into everyday use.
My final year at my previous employer involved a change in role to a sales based position, working directly with customers and my engineering team. #LamResearch was one company I really wanted to work with as a supplier, but I never had the opportunity. I was familiar with some of the Lam products, having worked on them in the 90's and it was a company I wanted to get to work with on a regular basis.
So what has this got to do with me getting a repair done on my car?
My return from California coincided with a decision to not work for the final 2 months of 2021. With the new year looming, I decided to start looking, while getting contacted by others I had worked with in various roles to see if I might be interested in applying for positions they had. My walk that day took me past a building that had the Lam Logo on it. #IFoundLam
It took me seconds to decide to press the intercom button and I introduced myself and said I was looking for a job as an engineer. The guy on the other end invited me to come into the building and go up to the office door. There was still a mask policy in place, but I as I approached the door, the person I had spoken to came through it and I instantly recognized my old manager from a previous role! We spoke, I was also introduced to the service manager and had an interview scheduled within a week.
My role was confirmed 2 weeks later after further interviews.
I now get to work with people from all around the world, locally, virtually and beyond on leading edge technology.
As someone said to me recently, “you work for a cool company!” I do.
