Indicators must be SMART, everyone will agree to that... but how frequently and how thoroughly do we actually assess the "SMARTness" of the indicators we use and recommend? Through years of health systems monitoring, HeRAMS has repeatedly raised questions on the relevance of health facility types as a proxy of the availability of specific services. In other words, when we use indicators such as the number of primary care facilities per 10,000 people, how effectively are we informing decision-makers about the availability of essential health services and related gaps? This study reveals that the relevance of such indicators is far less apparent than commonly assumed. This raises concerns on the relevance of strategies that are currently being supported in information management, health information systems, response monitoring, etc. It also highlights the need to further investigate this issue and possibly determine better suited startegies to ensure decision makers are adequately informed. Thanks to all who contributed to this pivotal work!
New paper out! 📊 In our latest article we assess the reliability of health facility types in reflecting specific health service availability, focusing on Mali's health system. 💡 This is important because health facility types are often used as a measure of service availability in international standards for health system policy and planning. 🏥 Through analyzing a comprehensive dataset containing information from 1725 health facilities in Mali, we discovered that relying solely on facility typology may not accurately depict service availability. 📑🔬 These results have significant implications for health policy and planning. The reliance on health facility types as indicators for health system policy and planning should be reconsidered.
