Developing its business expansion, PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (Harita Group) or Harita Nickel formed two new joint ventures with the Hong Kong company. The joint venture is PT Cipta Prosperity Partners (CKM) and PT Bhakti Earth Sentosa (BBS) formed with Hong Kong Blue Whale Limited, a Hong Kong-based energy company. Freeport Indonesia's smelter in Gresik, East Java, is targeted to be fully operational by the end of this year. Freeport's second copper refinery, after PT Smelting Gresik, has the potential to gain foreign exchange amid the high value of the US dollar while strengthening the resilience of the national economy. After completing the construction of the plant, the PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) smelter entered the commissioning stage on Thursday (27/6/2024). Investment for this project reached 3.6 billion US dollars or around IDR 58 trillion. Indonesia will be able to reduce the domestic prices of electric vehicles, or EVs, by up to 30 percent by taking the initiative to manufacture its own EV batteries, Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita stated, as reported by Antara. "I believe that the prices of electric cars will drop by 20-30 percent," he said in Jakarta on Thursday, March 28. Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) started the first shipment of copper concentrate from Amamapare Port, Mimika Regency, Central Papua Province to PTFI smelter at the Special Economic Zone (KEK), Java Integrated Industrial and Port Estate (JIIPE), Gresik, East Java Province, which started operational in June 2024. "PTFI's smelter in Gresik is ready to operate, so we are starting the first shipment of copper concentrate. In Guinea, PT Tianshan Alumina Indonesia has solidified its upstream bauxite resources and cost competitiveness by acquiring a local mining company. This acquisition grants the company priority access to mineral products, ensuring a stable supply of bauxite resources and procurement costs. The Guinea project, which commenced mining operations in 2024, aims to export bauxite to China to meet domestic alumina production needs, with an annual capacity projected at 5-6 million tons. Indonesia, holding over half the global market share in nickel as of 2023, has experienced a surge in nickel mining and production activities, causing a glut that decreased global prices. But this has led to unsustainable extraction rates, prompting the government to impose a moratorium on new processing facilities and request investment in High Pressure Acid Leach facilities for electric vehicle battery production. These strategies must balance economic growth, job creation and environmental sustainability.
