Located in Forest Gate, East London, Westbury Road transforms an undeveloped plot into a vibrant residential community. The site, bound by low-rise homes and a four-storey police station, presented unique challenges and opportunities for Marjoram Architects to maximize its potential. The development introduces 16 high-quality apartments, offering a mix of 1, 2, and 3-bedroom units with tenures split between affordable housing and private sale. This balance ensures accessibility and diversity within the community. Key design features include: ✔️ Carefully considered massing: The building’s sculpted façade and stepped upper levels respond to site constraints and blend harmoniously with the surrounding neighbourhood. This approach also enhances privacy, minimizes impact on neighbouring properties, and adheres to important planning considerations such as the 45° rule. ✔️ Landscaped public realm: Around the building, thoughtfully designed outdoor spaces encourage interaction and create a sense of place, with integrated and projected balconies overlooking the shared spaces. Every detail, from the building’s scale to its façade, has been designed to create sustainable, well-connected urban living environments. In the city of Cape Town, within the Western Cape province of South Africa, a masterfully designed estate is tucked into the hillside. Designed to be a sanctuary of Architecture and Nature, the residence becomes a part of its natural environment seeking to blur the lines of where the home ends and the wilderness begins. Expansive green roofs with local native vegetation, provide views of the natural environment from most interior spaces. A cantilevered reflection pond extends off of one level of the home and offers expansive views of the forested region. The pond also works to increase biodiversity in the immediate region, while supporting aquatic vegetation that filter and clean the water. Green roofs act as an insulator for the interior spaces, helping to regulate temperatures yearround. The home is a stunning example of creative and thoughtful design, that puts the natural environment at the forefront of its conceptualization. Architecture That Grows From the Landscape The Gumuchdjian Villa is designed by the UK architect from the seven internationally renowned architects, who are creating seven individual responses to working with a sustainable ethos and the landscape of La Reserva Sotogrande. Philip Gumuchdjian sets out the thinking behind his projects with a view to re-stating the relevance of architecture in an increasingly virtual, image driven world, in his book “Sensing Place, What is the Point of Architecture”. In this villa design Gumuchdjian describes the design process as"There are three essentials - the sun, the sea and the land. The building embraces these elements, to create a home that grows from the landscape”. A shared architectural language is that of the architectural designs, reconnecting us to the landscape and powerfully seeking greater equity between environment and design. In the way Gumuchdjian Architects describes his villa within The Seven, La Reserva Sotogrande there is a sense of creating spaces of connection, of communication, of reach. “The upper buildings are transparent to preserve the sense of continuity of internal and external spaces. The pavilions radiate out towards the 210 degree views like outstretched fingers.” Within the description of views like outstretched fingers, there is the quality of open curiosity. In the transparent walls of the living area, a vision to be at one with the environment, whilst remaining connected with each other The infinity pool further echoing the outstretched fingers as it reaches out to the horizon. As Gumuchdjian poses questions on architecture, the architectural design allows for these questions to be explored, realised, whereby the virtual is real, earthed and the images on our screens are dispersed, driven are views of the landscape in real time. Where our senses may be dulled, Gumuchdjian describes the view as awakening, “reaching a crescendo”, as if to awaken us, as the view of this villa is considered an intrinsic feature, a building material in its own right. Imagine living in this stunning residential tower! This architectural render showcases a modern high-rise apartment building with floor-to-ceiling windows and a sleek design. Large windows are a great way to bring natural light into a space, which can have many benefits for residents. Natural light has been shown to improve mood, boost productivity, and even help regulate sleep cycles. Design projects like this one allow architects and developers to visualize a building before it is constructed. This can help to ensure that the final product meets the needs of the community and creates a livable and functional space. What are your thoughts on this design? Would you live in a high-rise apartment building? #architecture #design #rendering #residential #apartment #highrise #cityliving #windows #naturallight #benefitsofdesign #interiordesign #exteriordesign #futureofdesign
