The vectored-thrust configuration has been emerging as the dominant design in passenger eVTOL. Why does this precisely matter? When you have a design dominance approaching, it usually is a great time to form ventures in that vertical. This is because complexity is being de-risked and conceptual thinking around the technology & use cases is solidifying. Does this mean you should be founding a vehicle OEM startup? Not necessarily. Finding capital for building an eVTOL vehicle is incredibly difficult today, given investor fatigue post-COVID boom. The opportunity lies in providing solutions to the AAM ecosystem. These could be batteries, operations software, computer vision, advanced manufacturing, reliable comms, & many more. It is a great time to build products in aerospace and time it correctly for large venture outcomes.

Chinese Robotaxi Startup WeRide Wants to Hit the US Market (and Maybe Make $5 Billion) Hold onto your steering wheels, folks. WeRide, a Chinese company building self-driving taxis, vans, buses, and even street sweepers, is aiming for a $5 billion valuation in its US IPO. Talk about ambitious. This comes at a tricky time, with the Biden administration potentially banning Chinese software in self-driving cars. But WeRide's got some big names in its corner. Renault Nissan Mitsubishi's venture capital arm, a Russian investment fund, and even German auto giant Bosch are all interested in buying shares. Here's the deal: WeRide wants to raise $119 million by selling shares at $15.50 to $18.50 each. They're also doing a private placement, potentially bringing in another $320 million. WeRide's been testing its tech in 30 cities across 7 countries. The catch? Chinese IPOs in the US have been a bit shaky lately. Remember Didi Global? Yeah, not so smooth. WeRide's financials aren't exactly stellar either. They lost $123 million in the first half of this year. Controversial opinion: vectored-thrust is emerging as the dominant design for passenger eVTOL V1.0. Us technologists & engineers often underestimate the momentum that economic forces - especially VC investment - can exert on the product design that becomes the industry standard. The tilt-rotors, tilt-fans, and the tilt-wings of the world have the largest venture investment to date: $5.5B+ in funding and counting. This makes 65% of all funding in passenger eVTOL, majority of it going into ~5 companies that are public. To be clear, I am not saying the vectored-thrust is the optimum technical configuration for passenger applications. It may or may not be.
