That's a wrap on HR in Hospitality Atlanta! One of our core initiatives this year at Beekeeper is to #connect and connect we did! Attending a conference as an attendee and vendor without a booth was a really interesting experience. Instead of standing in a booth waiting for people to walk up to us, we got to sit in sessions and really learn about some of the current issues our customers are facing today. Here are a few of my learnings from the week: Visa and Immigration topics are front of mind to many of our HR leaders. The restrictions here have a direct impact on their seasonal workforce and providing great experiences to our guests. Some leaders are taking their own personal time and lobbying on The Hill to have their voices be heard. Culture trumps everything, and it starts at the top. The hiring market is incredibly tight. How do you stand out when the pay scale is even? Leadership development programs and cultivating and growing your next generations of leaders from within is critical. Both stay and exit interviews, surveying team members early and often play a factor in retention. The future of hospitality is already here. The leaders that are agile and constantly adapting to the changing market are going to remain the leaders. The teams that focus on the status quo and doing things the way that they have always been done aren't going to make it. Thank you HR leaders for letting us learn from you all this week. I spent time with Rosanne Thompson Thompson recently. She’s the VP of Human Resources at Golden Nugget Lake Charles, where she heads up HR for over 1,800 employees! Here’s what I learned from time with Rosanne: There are points in everyone’s career when taking a step back is essential to taking two steps forward. You have to be open to accepting a job that may feel like a demotion, but ultimately provides you with a broader skill set. When you broaden your skillset, you increase your relevancy. It’s this kind of long term thinking that helps people get ahead. HR must remember that it supports the business. The business doesn’t support HR. Sometimes HR policies can be so rigid that it creates operational roadblocks, negatively impacting performance and culture. HR needs to partner with the operators of the business. They should perform line level work to truly understand pain points and opportunities. Armed with that experience, HR can then uniquely cater to each function and bend processes that drive efficiency, strong culture, and productivity. Engagement is an HR priority, especially in hospitality where it’s relatively easy for a front line worker to find another job as a server or waitress on the same day they quit. So, you have to be really focused on driving loyalty and giving employees the coping mechanisms for managing through challenging times. Having a strong emphasis on training and benefits helps. When you provide employees growth, access, and opportunities that elevate their lives, you retain your people. Strong culture starts at the top. For Rosanne's company, their culture is centered around the guest experience. Their leadership - from directors to the c-suite - have all lived the values of the organization and demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the company. Many have stayed with the company since its inception. What I loved learning about was their guest service committee. It's made up of front line workers, who work diligently to discover ways to improve the guest experience. As Rosanne states, “the best ideas often come from those who are on the front lines”. This is an important example of leadership embracing “bottoms-up innovation”. They’ve done a great job at taking an inclusive approach that has paid off in meaningful ways.
