Did you know that Walmart is investing $1 billion to upskill 1.5 million employees by 2025? That's right - the retail giant is tackling the skills gap head-on with its "Live Better U" program, offering free college education and skills training to associates. And they're not alone in recognizing the urgency of this issue. Some key findings from the latest skills gap research: • 87% of companies are facing a skills gap or expect to within a few years • The top missing skills are critical thinking (65%), communication (64%), and leadership (61%) • Only 34% of workers feel supported by their organization's skill development opportunities • By 2030, the global talent shortage could reach 85 million workers The skills gap is impacting businesses in major ways - from reduced productivity to lost revenue opportunities. But there are solutions. Upskilling and reskilling programs, partnerships with educational institutions, and leveraging apprenticeships are all strategies companies are using to bridge the gap. What's your take on the skills gap? How is your organization addressing it? Let's discuss in the comments! I AM IMPRESSED - YOU CAUGHT MY ATTENTION Team Talent Trekkers from Nanyang Polytechnic was selected to be mentored by SFS for the finals for Supply Chain Challenge++ 2024. I gave them a problem statement, but not to solve a company specific challenge but an industry wide. In short, how to attract, retain and groom young talents (Gen Z). The young talents in SFS were roped in to support the team. I am impressed that in 48 days and still have to attend exams, schools and other matters they managed to come up with an outstanding solution. They collabrated and surveyed over 1000 students across 14 Institute of Higher Learning and managed to get 510 participants asking 5 basic questions. Basically is salary more important or career progression. They also introduced micro learning to shorten the learning curve of new employees and proven to me that it works. On the day of the finals they were flawless in their presentation including responding very well to the difficult questions from the judges. I will implement the solutions from Talent Trekkers across all SFS offices and partner networks. Thank you for for showing me a different perspective when employing Gen Z with the survey questions. With that, I will retire from participating in Supply Chain Challenge (Champions 2022 and 2023) instead I will continue to groom young talents across all industries to join the logistics industry and I won't be alone in this journey. Thank you Talent Trekkers and the Young Talents of SFS, you have showed me that you are willing to collabrate and work together to come up with a workable solution to solve an industry challenge and you are spot on! The future is bright! #SGLogistics #manpowercrunch #attractingtalents #groomingtalents #microlearning

Is your retail organization focused on everboarding? This is a topic of increasing importance, as today’s retail talent pool is searching for jobs that will invest in their development and growth. During MOHR Retail’s recent webinar, I dove into this topic with our panelists. Take a look at some of the takeaways below: ▶ Lisa Anderson (She/Her/Hers), Division Vice President of Optometry at EyeCare Partners, shared that when it comes to individual career-pathing and growth plans, they use a variety of training formats, including microburst training to hands-on experience and focus time with a mentor. This approach has proven valuable from a retention standpoint and in helping drive more internal promotions. ▶ Mike Van Lente, Executive Leader of Learning & Development at Whole Foods Market, noted that they offer a development program to prepare high-potential team members for each leadership role in a store, from associate team leader (assistant manager) all the way to store team leader (general manager). ▶ Career-pathing isn’t just about moving into leadership, though, as Van Lente pointed out. Whole Foods also offers apprenticeship programs that are designed to build specialized skills and knowledge, creating a pipeline of artisan talent to fill different roles across the specialty grocer’s departments. In all, retail organizations need to focus on varying pathways for team members to create advancement and increased income opportunities. By investing in an everboarding approach, retail organizations will improve their opportunities to recruit and retain the top talent. How has your retail organization invested in everboarding? #LearnMOHR #RetailTraining #Everboarding

Experience ≠ Talent. Experience comes with time, but just as you can gain valuable insights, you can also pick up bad habits. On the other hand, talent is something you naturally have or acquire through consistent effort, curiosity, and a genuine desire to learn. That’s why it’s important to keep exploring and learning for your benefit—not because someone else tells you how things should be based on their experience. As Pepsi says it best, “Sab ka sunne ka, khud ka karne ka.” #KeepLearning #TalentVsExperience #StayCurious #GrowthMindset #ContinuousLearning #Pepsi

Nestlé’s Training & Development-Case Study In today’s session, we explored Nestlé’s approach to training and development, a prime example of effective human capital management. Using the case study method made our discussion engaging and practical, highlighting key strategies and real-world applications. Key Insights: On-the-Job Training: Nestlé emphasizes hands-on learning, with managers playing a crucial role in coaching their teams. Apprenticeship Programs: Designed to build a skilled workforce, though facing challenges like talent poaching, these programs provide a strong foundation for career growth. International Training: The Rive-Reine Centre in Switzerland illustrates Nestlé’s commitment to global leadership and cross-cultural learning. The case study method proved invaluable in understanding how Nestlé balances local and global training needs. For us as L&D HR students, it’s a clear example of how continuous learning and adaptability are essential in the modern workplace. #IMDR #TrainingAndDevelopment #Nestlé #CaseStudy #HRM #ContinuousLearning #learningAndDevelopment
