Employees Types
The Bhagwad Gita states that the material nature constitutes of three gunas (loosely translated as inherent nature, quality or property ) —
sattva - harmony, balance, joy, and intelligence, and goodness
rajas - energy, action, change, movement, and passion
tamas - darkness, inertia, inactivity, ignorance, and materiality
Since the body, mind, and intellect are material in nature, they too possess these three modes, and a combination of these gunas forms the basis of one’s character. These forces are present within us at all times and manifest in our reactions to certain situations and experiences.
However, they do not exist in pure form. One of the gunas is always more dominant than the other two.
In an organization also, the employees can be categorized in the above three gunas -
1. The satvik types- They are good, calm, and harmonious. They follow rules. They are contented in the work. They look for the overall progress of the organization. They are not so much influenced by promises of rewards and recognition. For them the work completed well and successfully in itself is sufficient. They are the silent workers. Values of ethical conduct appeal to them.
2. The rajasik- They are passionate, and energetic. They crave for recognition and rewards. They complete the work successfully expecting rewards and recognition. They can be motivated by setting targets and giving promotions, incentives etc. They value ethics to the extent it is beneficial to them.
3. The tamasik types- They are ignorant or feign ignorance out of laziness, and to avoid work. They create trouble for others, look for shortcuts, look for ways to pull down others. For them any training, coaching, mentoring etc. do not help. Ethics do not appeal to them.
An organization needs to identify the three categories and take action-
1. Weed out tamasik employees, managers at the earliest opportunity.
2. Motivate the the rajasik employees. . Provide rewards and recognition to them.
3. Provide a good healthy work environment for the satvik. Appreciate their work.
