Well put Zack LU, Dr. Ir. The good thing is that we meanwhile have quite some running applications of automation technology from which we still can and should learn. Not from 10km height, but by in-depth analysis of what works and what doesn’t. Portwise we have been part of most of the automation implementations world-wide. So we gathered the experiences, and can apply them in new projects.
Had a great pleasure participated the Port Technology International - PTI webinar "Navigate the new path to terminal autmation" with FERNRIDE and HHLA Next and shared a few points about #automation from what I/we Portwise see from our past decades' long involvement in various projects and happening in our #terminal industry. It is not a small topic. 1hr would never be enough to dive in depth, while to navigate and find the right path to #automation certainly needs a detailed and tailored approach - just like one question raised "for the various automated transport system in our market - #AGVs or #liftAGVs, #autoshuttles or #autostraddles, now #autonmous TTs, what are pros and cons?" The arguments can be very long - e.g., coupling vs. decoupling, mixing vs. separation traffic, lifting capability or without, CAPEX/OPEX, etc. But what matters in the end is what suits best the specific needs and the unique situations of each individual terminal and each case. After all, a case-by-case tailored look is also essential to confidence in the decision-making. It is not a brand new topic, either. Yes, new technologies such as #autonomous driving is being rapidly developed, #AI is being talked and (slowly) being put into cases in our industry, etc. The list can go on, each with potentials or hopes. There indeed may be no crystal ball to conclude which technology will become the next real groundbreaking one for our industry. Yet, many "old" #lessonslearnt from our past automation experiences will still be relevant, valid, and insightful when industry embraces whatever next "new" #technologies in real use cases and proven concepts. If you miss it, below is the link for replay. If you're interested for more detailed and tailored discussion, feel free to reach out - would be thrilled to exchange ideas to see how to bring your site, and the industry forward along this course! #TerminalAutomation

As Zack LU, Dr. Ir.. pointed out, we see a lot of stories that people have a solution in their mind, e.g. autonomous Terminal Tractors, whilst underestimating the impact it has on the #operation, particularly during a transition towards #automation or #autonomy. When considering the operational impacts and risks during the transition, it becomes evident that certain automated concepts may not be feasible. For example, they may entail significant implementation timelines, while heaving a notable reduction in performance and capacity. Moreover, it's important to acknowledge the substantial impact automation can have on the way we work. While operators and dock workers have the #flexibility to assign work and utilize temporary solutions to meet targets, automation typically demands a more predictable workflow. In summary, it's crucial to thoroughly evaluate both the operational implications and workforce dynamics when implementing automation or autonomy in order to ensure a smooth transition and optimal #performance.
