When I run my tone of voice workshops, I always include examples from Monzo Bank. Why? Because they've nailed theirs!
As one of the 'cool' new(ish) challenger banks, they've decided to go down the relatability route rather than the traditional tone many of the more established banks take. (You know the ones, the horse advert panning through multiple generations that inexplicably makes me cry.)
And I haven't looked at the engagement levels of other banks to compare but I'd bet that Monzo get far higher rates of interaction from their customers thanks to their approachable, tongue-in-cheek style.
It's a fine balance to strike because they need customers to be able to trust them with their money and sometimes there are more serious updates to be shared. But in a way, by establishing the human side of their brand and fostering connection through creating repeated 'ha, that's exactly what it's like' moments for their audience, I'd bet that when there is a more corporate announcement people pay more attention because they know it must be important.
Your brand's tone of voice can be anything you want it to be but it has to be sustainable and to create connection. Something that Monzo absolutely smash.
As for the late to the call excuses below, what's your favourite?

REASONS I WAS LATE TO THE CALL (WFH EDITION):
– my doorbell rang
– my cat threw up
– I was folding my laundry
– I was making a snack
– I was looking inside my fridge for no real reason
