Qualitative research often requires significant emotional labor to be effective, yet emotional labor is socially coded as feminine. So how do gender biases impact perceptions of the value of qualitative research, and what we can do to address those prejudices? So, I'm curious to know ⬇ if any other qual-focused #UXResearchers or #MarketResearchers have encountered obvious instances of these biases in action. Do you have any #advice for navigating such situations? Shoutout to author Gemma Hartley and researcher/advocate Breanna Boppre for so effectively articulating this in "Fed Up: Emotional Labor, Women, and the Way Forward." #GenderBias #ResearchMethods #QualitativeResearch

🌅 The Diversity Inside Media Organisations report explores employee attitudes and perceptions toward Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within media organisations. We surveyed 450 individuals in the #media industry to understand their thoughts on how DEI in media companies is changing, focusing on gender and ethnicity as a starting point for our research. We found a strong correlation between organisations that prioritise #Diversity and #Inclusion, and an increase in feelings of empowerment, accountability and career progression amongst employees. This report focuses on key topics such as the prioritisation of diversity compared to commercial priorities, diversity prioritisation between junior and senior staff, and the use of technology such as AI to improve diversity efforts. For a full breakdown of our findings, download the report here: https://lnkd.in/ekXkW8UM

It is, indeed, how we say it. #Linguistics research has shown that language can reinforce stereotypes and perpetuate unequal power dynamics. The authors in this Harvard Business Review study investigated “whether gender differences in behavior drive gender differences in outcomes.” In the company studied, a multinational firm, women were underrepresented in upper management. “Women made up roughly 35%-40% of the entry-level workforce but a smaller percentage at each subsequent level. Women made up only 20% of people at the two highest seniority levels at this organization.” Their finding: men and women exhibited similar behavior. But if men and women exhibit similar behavior in the workplace, why do men have significantly higher promotion rates? Why weren’t women advancing, but men were? Their analysis: Gender #inequality is due to #bias, and that gender differences may lie not in how women act, but in how people perceive them. WriteByMe is a GenAI-powered text editor that eliminates the likelihood of implicit gender bias in #communication. The role of language as a carrier of bias is powerful. Where the proverbial rubber meets the road is in how we are perceived; how we are heard. This is how we do it. So yes, it is how we say it. #GenderEquality #WordsMatter #WriteByMe #WriteWithUs

Let’s be honest: most of us use statistics published by research foundations to get our way: to get funding for a project, sell something, pitch a book, or just win an argument. But how many of us actually take the time to understand how the data was collected, whether or not the source is unbiased, or look beyond whatever number makes our point to understand the whole story? So I set out to find someone who could fill in some of our gaps in understanding. Today we’re joined by the PEW Research Center Associate Director of Research, Juliana Horowitz. PEW is a nonpartisan research institution dedicated to providing the public with objective information about the issues, attitudes, and trends that shape the world. For the last decade and a half, Juliana has been designing and managing domestic and international survey projects at PEW, covering a wide range of social issues including race and gender equality, the changing American family, economic well-being, and of course, for the purposes of our show, attitudes about Employment and Work. Juliana is involved in all stages of the research process at Pew Research Center, including topic selection, the design of major survey initiatives, and data analysis and reporting. In this episode, Juliana and I discuss the research behind how Americans view their jobs, what we know about why people quit during the Great Resignation, and how the pandemic reshaped work in the U.S. We also talk about the mission of the Pew Research Center, how Pew picks topics, the research methods, how talking heads and politicians sometimes spin the data for their own ends, and the right way to hear and use such research, as well as other topics. #management, #statistics #greatresignation #jobsatisfaction #leadership #HR #experiencedesign

Qualitative Research Consultant & "Idea Girl" w/ a Love for Kids/Teens & Moms! (And Savvy Ability to Meet Budgets)
Look ma! I'm presenting on Gen Z and gender again with one of my favorite co-presenters, Southpaw Insights' Hannah Kaplan, MPH (A Gen Z and non-binary person with a masters in public health, so they really know their stuff and are super patient with questions about their journey and others. Love them!). 2 pm central/3 pm eastern (Noon pacific and 1 pm mountain). Excited to talk about the opportunities to embrace what is not new, but perhaps new-to-us in gender fluidity. Hannah answers a lot of my questions and helps us understand. I offer you a different way of thinking about moderating what is a significant group from Gen Z and Alpha's perspective.
