DNDi Africa Ambassador, Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative, Former Director and Founding Chair Leishmaniasis East Africa Platform (LEAP)
Yesterday was a historic day for Eastern Africa! The World Health Organization released a strategic framework for the elimination of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) as a public health problem in Eastern Africa. https://lnkd.in/ddSrUTc9 When I started my career over 30 years ago, we were just grappling with treating patients with VL, making sure that they didn't die from this deadly disease. The only available treatments were often toxic, ineffective, lengthy and difficult to administer. In 2003, together with experts from Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, and later Uganda, Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative - DNDi, founded the Leishmaniasis East Africa Platform (LEAP). This initiative brought together researchers, collaborators, and partners working to improve research related to leishmaniasis. Our desire was to one day have this disease eliminated. In January 2003, the WHO met in Nairobi with DNDi, Ministry of Health representatives from Chad, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda, and other partners and unanimously launched the Nairobi Declaration to eliminate VL as a public health problem in Eastern Africa. I am extremely happy we are launching this framework today and our vision as researchers in the region is finally being realized. My years of experience working in the field alongside fellow researchers and communities affected by VL has taught me that medical innovation and partnerships, driven and supported by strong African leadership, are essential to effectively combat VL. I firmly believe we can achieve a leishmaniasis-free Africa within my lifetime. South-East Asia is already on the verge of eliminating it. Therefore, like former President Obama's slogan, ‘Yes we can,’ I also believe in my heart that, ‘yes, we can!’ #HopeforLeishmaniasis

🦠 Last week, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, PhD, the Director General for the World Health Organization, issued a statement on X, announcing his plans to convene an emergency committee under the International Health Regulations to determine whether the mpox outbreaks warrant declaring a public health emergency. On August 14, 2024, Ghebreyesus concluded and announced that the growing number of mpox cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and its invasion into surrounding African countries warrant a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). "The emergence of a new clade of mpox, its rapid spread in eastern DRC, and the reporting of cases in several neighboring countries are very worrying. On top of outbreaks of other mpox clades in DRC and other countries in Africa, it’s clear that a coordinated international response is needed to stop these outbreaks and save lives,” he said in the WHO press release. According to the WHO press release, the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee, comprised of independent experts, met to inform Ghebreyesus that the increasing number of mpox cases and the potential for international spread warranted a PHEIC. 💉 #StaySafe #GlobalHealth #PublicHealthEmergency #Mpox #WHO #HealthAwareness #StayInformed #ProtectYourself #HealthIsWealth #Prevention #HealthMatters #PandemicPreparedness #VirusAlert #ViralOutbreak

Public Health remains in our hearts always. I am excited to be among the Global community participating in this year's Neglected Tropical Diseases-NTDs NGOs Network-NNN Conference happening in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. World Health Organisation-WHO has challenged all stakeholders to an ambitious target to eliminate Neglected Tropical Diseases by 2030. During this Conference, different conversations will be held to evaluate where the World is in this course and to map out new plans towards the Agenda 2030. In 2023, I led the regional team to plan and implement the first ever WHO recommended Model Based Geostatistical Methodology-MBG in Nigeria for assessing treatment impact-STH/SCH. More conversations on the MBG methodology will be on top gear in the NNN Conference in Malaysia. More so, the 2nd impact assessment using the same MBG methodology will be happening again in Nigeria on our arrival as plans are on top gear. The MBG methodology is cost effective and more reliable in all ramifications against the traditional methods. We are hopeful that different governments and stakeholders will commit to this agenda to get NTDs eliminated.
