Some days you're the dog, and other days you're the hydrant... The days started off well enough. I couldn't get to sleep, and maybe got an hour. Then I chose to spend my day in a department that was anything but active. I finally figured out how to most effectively use ride share from the Las Vegas airport, and thought I'd use DoorDash to send some food to my room so I could have some food sent to my room soon after I arrived. When I got to my room, I discovered that they forgot to send housekeeping, so my towels were all in the bin waiting to be picked up. About 6:15 I was sent a message that the driver who was bringing me my supplies was somehow unable to drop them off. At this point, my DoorDash delivery was coming up on 30 minutes late, and I just wished I could cancel it and go out to grab a quick bite. At 6:40 some of the most soggy, cold, and disgusting food was left at my door. DoorDash helpfully messaged me that there was nothing they could do about it as apparently everything happened within their policies! We all have days like this, but the good news is that they usually are followed by much better ones. Why I hate DoorDash It represents the race to the bottom. How can we do the bare minimum of acceptable service for the lowest price possible. And they comonly work in stealth mode by being the delivery service for local businesses I'm trying to support. Tonight we ordered a pizza from our local place through the Slice app. It's hot out tonight so we elect to get the pizza delivered. When the pizza arrives (timeliness was fine) they don't knock on the door or ring the doorbell, but instead leave it on a plant stand on the front porch. When we start wondering where the pizza is, we decide to check outside and see it at an angle on the top of a broken plant stand. I check my phone and see that an unnamed Doordash driver is apparently the one that delivered it. I can't complain to my local pizza place, because they didn't do the delivery. I can't complain to Slice because THEY didn't do the delivery. And I can't use the Doordash app to complain because it doesn't show up as an order from my account. I now need to google how to file a complaint with Doordash, go through an automated "help" with very poor user flow until I'm mashing the 0 button on my phone to get to an actual person that can help me. I explain the issue and they reply, "So, you didn't get your food?" *SIGH* I have to explain it again so they actually understand the issue. The send me an email with an issue # so i can send them a photo of the broken planter. I'm told they will "send this to their internal investigation group" and the Dasher will be "appropriately disciplined." No offer of refunding anything or for paying for damages. When I was in my teens and early 20s, I delivered pizzas. I worked as a driver for the restaurant and if someone had a complaint, they called my boss who also owned the pizza joint. I made damn sure I delivered on time and with more than a modicum of care, because I'd get fired. I have no idea what one complaint to a souless corporate greed machine like Doordash will do, but it's obvious the very nature of their system doesn't give a damn about me.

Interesting read with your morning coffee ☕ Boston and several other cities are starting a crackdown on dangerous food delivery drivers and the city is demanding answers from the heads of DoorDash, Grubhub and Uber Eats. "Many of these drivers are operating unregistered vehicles. We have witnessed widespread and ongoing incidents of running red lights, driving on city sidewalks, driving the wrong way down one-way streets, driving at speeds in excess of posted limits, and collisions," the letter states. "This type of operation puts the delivery driver, and any pedestrian or driver of a motor vehicle who encounters them, in imminent danger." This letter was sent from Boston's police commissioner to DoorDash CEO Tony Xu, GrubHub CEO Howard Midgal and Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty, the senior vice president of delivery for Uber. The increased traffic, carbon emissions and the above stated dangerous driving, especially in multifamily communities are issues that is being considered in the upcoming launch of a new methodology of food delivery services. My $30 DoorDash order comes with a customer experience that puts most other companies to shame. I snapped this screenshot today, and I can't help but be amazed at the world we live in. With just a few taps on my phone, I can satisfy my cravings and get updates on exactly where my food is. Think about it: feeling hungry? Order a meal and track its progress right to your doorstep. If you decide you want ice cream or another snack, you can have the driver make an extra stop. We're living in an age where anyone with a phone and a few dollars can experience concierge-level service. Imagine a family dinner where everyone at the table gets exactly what they want from their favorite restaurant. Steak from one place, salad from another – it's all possible now. Technology has made it so easy to enjoy life's little luxuries, and it's truly mind-blowing. If we're living in a time when people get this high level of service for something as simple as dinner, imagine how high their expectations are for the product or service you're offering at the price you're offering. Some things I’ve learned in this past month as a #Dasher for DoorDash: ·       #Communication is king. It doesn’t have to be big, elaborate, well-crafted speeches. Something as simple as “The restaurant is out of their regular gravy for mashed potatoes. Would you be ok with poultry gravy instead?” is literally 5 ⭐ material. ·       If there are instructions, check and double check them, and when in doubt, ask. Again, this is 5 ⭐ material. ·       In general, #people are really bad drivers. We all know this as a baseline, but when your job is driving safely and efficiently, you really notice just how bad it is. ·       Sorry Google Maps, but for navigation from your phone, Apple Maps is objectively better. ·       Seriously DoorDash, get your app to work on CarPlay. It’s a safety issue. Final note: if you get an applicant who has service industry experience, you can know as a baseline that they have some skill handling difficult situations, difficult people, and rapid-fire change. In other words, they’ll make a great employee!

DoorDash might have executed one of the most underrated market takeovers in history. In a little over 3 years, they shot up from 16% to a crazy 53% share of the US delivery app market. Here's 3 tactics they used to outplay (or honestly crush) Uber Eats, GrubHub, and Postmates: 1. Avoiding crowded spaces Instead of battling for trendy restaurants, DoorDash targeted established spots without delivery, winning over loyal customer bases and avoiding unnecessary fights. 2. Being a restaurant’s best friend They didn’t just deliver food—they delivered insights. By sharing data on top dishes, customer trends, and delivery times, DoorDash became an essential partner for restaurants. 3. Owning the suburbs While others fought over cities, DoorDash focused on suburban families, a higher-order-value goldmine that competitors overlooked. They had a mission to accomplish and delivered it.

Take notes…last mile delivery start-ups! There are a whole army of would be loyal delivery partners with cargo vans/box trucks in suburban and rural areas that would forever be grateful and provide the highest quality service for local delivery routes outside of major cities. Target mid-size cities with universities, rural areas with retail stores within a specified radius. Rural + larger size packages = $. Pay per stop with mileage + quality incentives and watch how competitors marvel, and customers rave, about your high quality and cost savings in reattempts, returns, and refunds! Onboard small delivery service providers with proper equipment + insurance (that they are already paying for) and start winning with high quality, professional service from local entrepreneurs with skin in the game. PR dream, helping small businesses deliver for large/medium sized businesses, making an impact in local communities…use your community engagement budget to actually sponsors their kid’s baseball team (we’ve all seen the memes.) We’re all fighting over the same volume and using outdated models to onboard delivery partners. Doing the same thing and expecting different results…well you know. There is only so much “tech” updates and advancements can do, sometimes it’s all about the people who we often overlook. The people aren’t going away in last/final mile any time soon!
