Wonderful! Addition to the question: We are particularly interested in suggestions for extensions to the canon that forward issues of surface, colour in space, atmosphere; material, physical and everyday practices, as much as non-western (incl. Eastern European) and *contemporary* manifestos. #interiortheory

This has been an amazing project to watch come to life. Linked below, is a blog post I wrote for Historic Charleston Foundation that highlights the incredible work of the architects at Sottile & Sottile, the development team at Greystar and LS3P ASSOCIATES LTD., and most importantly the amazing faculty and students at American College of the Building Arts for making this project come to life with their hands. I'd love to see some healthy discourse in the comments on what you think about this project. Is this scale of development appropriate in Charleston? Does having a building of this scale executed at such a high level of design excellence justify developments of this size? What could be done differently? What is your favorite/least favorite aspect of the project? https://lnkd.in/etfY8K-N

The base photograph for this digital rendition of the Main Concourse of New York’s original, though now sadly lost, Pennsylvania Station was taken in 1908 after the station’s construction was completed. Penn Station’s designer was McKim, Mead & White, New York’s most highly regarded Beaux Arts architectural firm; and the project, with its brilliant synthesis of old and new, is today considered among the greatest architectural and engineering achievements of the first half of the 20th Century. The project’s ambitious synthesis of stylistic liturgy and industrial technology drew from a catalogue of modern and Classical antecedents: The Baths of Caracalla, St. Peter’s Basilica, Bernini’s Colonnade surrounding St. Peter’s Square, London’s Crystal Palace, and the 19th Century predecessor train sheds of Europe. The structure’s enclosure system in particular produced a brilliant effect with it’s overhead glass vaults and cast-iron support, a design feature celebrated in another grand public space that has also inexplicably been torn down: Paris’ Central Produce Market Les Halles. The last half of the 19th Century was a time of tumultuous change and innovation, and structures such as Pennsylvania Station had to be consonant with both the spirit and practical needs of the times. The architectural use of iron and glass were but two of the many technologies that came of age during this time; and it is ironic, though not surprising, that a Beaux Arts firm such as McKim, Mead, and White, renowned in it’s day for its Classical literacy, are today best remembered for the technological and forward looking solutions embodied in their greatest single design that no longer exists.

Perceptual Grid - Reflections on our design work - Part 3 In the tranquility of Bastides, where shadows play with ancient stones, I first learned to listen to architecture’s subtle murmur. These early lessons, absorbed while juggling multiple jobs to put myself through school, have stayed with me. Decades later, they influence our current projects, shaped by what we call the 'Perceptual Grid'. This approach helps bridge the past with the present, allowing each space to evolve as it's felt. It's about creating architectural experiences that not only exists in time but also converses with it, reinterpreting tradition for modern times. We hope this post contributes to you finding your joy. Hand Sketch by Howard Chu, Saintes, France 1993
