This World Health day, we at JUNE want to remind you that health is so much more than merely the absence of disease. As defined by the World Health Organisation, health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing. Being healthy means being resilient to challenges, feeling like part of a community and feeling supported in your physical needs when illness or injury do come up in our lives. Because health is so complex, we need so many people in ADDITION to doctors to keep us feeling healthy. The healthcare system is contributed to by multidisciplinary medical professionals (eg. OTs, dieticians, therapists, physios, nurses), policy makers and lawyers. It is also contributed by innovators like US here at JUNE who work to simplify complex surgical procedures by providing uniquely capable surgical retractors. Check out some of our products in our catalogue + read reviews by surgeons to see how they are making a difference to healthcare! https://lnkd.in/e7byYPEw

Since the pandemic there has been a growing focus on patient autonomy in medical treatment, but how well do we really understand informed consent and its legal requirements? Consent forms are far than just paperwork or merely ticking a box. They play a critical role in safeguarding patient autonomy, ensuring informed decision-making and protecting medical practitioners from legal risks. Valid consent goes beyond a signature. It means that patients: -Are competent to make the decision; -Receive sufficient information about the procedure; and -Are not under duress, especially with content obtained on the day of surgery Ensuring your consent forms meet all legal requirements is crucial to the success of your practice. We explore this further in our article via the link in the comments. What do you think? Are consent forms undervalued in your practice? Do they genuinely reflect informed consent of your patients, or are they acting just as a formality? Leave your thoughts in the comments below. #Healthcare #InformedConsent #MedicalPractice #LegalCompliance #PatientCare

PSA: Make informed medical decisions ❗ ❗ ❗ I know not everyone here is well-versed in medicine, but we all go to the doctor and not just for routine checkups. When I take a loved one to see a doctor, I always ensure that they know how to clearly communicate their issue and write down all their questions before the appointment. Why? 💥 You usually forget all the essential details when you are nervous. 💥 It doesn't matter how much you know about your issue or procedure. If you don't work in that field, you'll likely have questions, even if you don't realize it. Talk to loved ones and brainstorm. Take the time to figure out what you do not know or understand. 💭 What questions should you ask? 💭 I am going to narrow this down to surgeries and procedures. ✅ What are your complication rates? Which specific complication? Do not be afraid to ask this question; it is important. You need to trust the person performing this procedure. 🚩 The biggest red flag is when a doctor says they do not know. They know. It is one of the metrics that they need to know. ✅ I also always ask how many of these procedures they have done in the last month or year. Practice makes perfect. In a rural hospital, there may be less opportunity for practice compared to a large teaching hospital. However, it would be concerning if a similar procedure is performed only once a year. Before visiting any healthcare provider, conduct your own research. Read reviews, seek advice from others in similar situations, and connect with other trusted healthcare providers. Make informed decisions because one of the most important things we have in life is our health, and there is no delete button and, in certain situations, no way to fix preventable errors. #icunurse #lnc #informedconsent #medicalmalpractice
