Kiran Afzal, Senior Private Sector Development Specialist at The World Bank, highlighted the critical role of community ownership in sustainable development efforts, advocating for a bottom-up approach in financing initiatives. "Financing must begin at the grassroots level," she stated, emphasizing that true impact stems from empowering local communities to take charge of their own development. In her view, as governments face increasing capacity constraints, it is essential for the private sector to step up, not only to bridge funding gaps but also to drive innovation and efficiency in public projects. Kiran Afzal further elaborated that the private sector's involvement is not just about financial contributions, but also about leveraging expertise, resources, and partnerships to enhance the effectiveness of public initiatives. She stressed the importance of collaboration between the private and public sectors, urging businesses to align their efforts with broader societal goals, such as infrastructure development, healthcare, and education. "Community ownership fosters accountability and sustainability," Kiran Afzal explained, underscoring the need for development initiatives to be locally driven and community-centered. By ensuring that communities are engaged from the outset, the likelihood of long-term success increases, as projects become tailored to the specific needs and challenges of the local population.
