Curious about board leadership? We know two of the biggest barriers to nurses serving on boards is time and Imposter Syndrome. Time: The board of directors has a monthly 1-hour virtual meeting. They meet in-person at the SDNP National Conference. Overall time commitment is 2-4 hours a month. Benefits of Serving on the SDNP Board: · Networking opportunities with leaders in dermatology nursing. · Influence the direction of SDNP and contribute to the profession. · Personal and professional development. It's not always the qualified who are called into leadership. Often, those who are called will become qualified through their service. I started serving on the Board for the National Practitioner Association of DC immediately after graduating NP school, but while still enrolled in my DNP Program. Simultaneously, I started volunteering on the Program Committee for DNPs of Color. I too struggled with Imposter Syndrome. The lovely Janice Linton, DNP, APRN, ANP-BC, CCRN, ACHPN spoke an encouraging word that helped me see my value doesn't lie in the hours or number of patients I see. It lies within me. For new NPs, I say this. You already received a degree from your school. The certification board, either American Association of Nurse Practitioners or American Nurses Credentialing Center, has granted you the certification you earned. The state has given you your licensure. Someone hired you for a NP job because you met the qualifications. Your limiting beliefs should be just that, limited. The highly accomplished, Dr. Stephan Davis, DNP, MHSA, FACHE, ANEF, FAAN, shared his personal testimony of this last night when he spoke for the Brother to Brother Distinguished Speaker Series sponsored by the Network of Black Male Nurse Leaders. Dr. Davis showed us exactly how important it is to own your destiny when he shared his personal journey into management just 8 months into his clinical practice- defying the old age advice of needing to wait ten years or work in med surg first.
