Ever wondered why the 'why' helps you build trust? There are two hospitals in a city. A news story breaks out: some hospital is giving patients unnecessary medication to keep them longer and make more money. Now, everyone is worried and starts to analyze the hospitals more carefully. Hospital 1 doesn't have a clear purpose. People start to lose trust in them, fearing they might be doing the same thing. Hospital 2 clearly states their purpose: to help people get healthy and live their life to the fullest. Because of this, people still trust them, knowing their intentions are good. Your 'why' shows people your true intentions and helps them feel secure trusting and choosing you.

When you visit your doctor, do you see the same friendly face each time? Or do you end up repeating your story over and over because appointments are rushed and doctors keep changing? When you can't build a strong bond with your doctor, it's easy for care to slip and things to get missed. Patients feel like they're just another name on a list, and doctors miss out on giving the continuous care we all want. ‼The answer? Focus less on rushing through appointments and more on building trust and connections with patients. Let's slow down, listen, and really examine patients. Let's treat them as individuals, not just cases to be solved quickly. Learn more about how Direct Primary Care at FreedomDoc at Westfield Premier can help! There is something so humbling and exposing when you are reminded of what it is like to be a patient, a family member, a consumer. Waiting for information, communication and those words of reassurance that it's going to be OK. We have outdone ourselves recently and tested not only my own hospital but hospitals in NZ with myself breaking my wrist and my husband having a huge stack on his bike with a # scapular, # clavicle, # 6 ribs, pneumothorax (clearly had to outdo me). So what have I learnt besides I love my hospital (thankyou for looking after us) and becoming extremely necessarily capable with my left hand? Those conversations matter more than we know. Sitting in a room, waiting for information and answers, tests and outcomes can become so overwhelming. Touching base with our consumers on the smallest of things makes massive impactful differences all the way down to offering to chop the food up because they have only one hand. I have made it my mission to preach "what matters" throughout our hospital already, however now with renewed passion and determination to inform, to teach, to empower staff I hope we can make every moment matter at John Flynn Private Hospital. Its such a small thing AND SHOULD NOT BE TREATED AS A TICK BOX. Take a moment, reset your conceptions, connect and make a difference, afterall that's why we became healthcare professionals. #consumer #whatmatterstome #goalsofcare

"You can stay with us!" 😇 The quote 👇 in the picture has been with me my whole professional life! What do you do if you are not satisfied with a hotel stay? Sure, you can book a room somewhere else next time! And what if you wait months for a doctor's appointment? 🤞 Do you give in to dependency and have no confidence, especially when it comes to your child, or do you take control yourself and get out of your comfort zone? 💡 ...no GP for almost a year, another practice closed and the reply from the medical association doesn't lead to a solution either. Then one day you get some good advice, you follow it, you take care of yourself and you finally get an appointment. 👊 Today, not on the spot, but a path that will prove worthwhile at the end of the day. We sit in the waiting room, a full practice, children screaming, your son next to you with pain. Just a normal day in the German healthcare system, in the sick system, a stress test! 👨👩👦 Then the MOMENT OF TRUTH, the first contact with the doctor, the first few minutes, mutual respect and appreciation for the concerns, then the suggestion as mentioned at the beginning... not because the practice is already overcrowded, not out of pity, but out of #understanding and #trust that has grown out of this moment! 💝 There is still a little hope! Patient or Guest... it´s YOUR choice! 🤝 Doc, you made my day! 🙏 #peoplebusiness #healthcare #communication #treatment #respect #network #hospitality

When we were in the hospital recently, every staff member who left the room put the call light next to my husband on the bed. Which is great---they have been trained and remember it ... except he has ALS and can’t move his hands. The good news for him is that he has me. I was with him 100% of the time (except for two 10-minute runs the the cafeteria per day and once when I went home for clothes and his dad sat next to him) I guess that is actually 97% of the time. Yes I calculated it. Yes I’m a nerd. Anyhow…he was never alone for more than 10 minutes, but not everyone has a family member that can do this for them. Most of the other patients around us were alone most of the time. Including a guy who called out for help continually because he also had trouble with his call light. 😢 My husband has a hard time talking. Calling out for help would have been a challenge… and impossible if he couldn’t catch his breath. So, I’m just sitting here, thinking about other patients with ALS and the myriad of conditions that make it hard or impossible to use a call light. What could have been done differently? Assess him for this when he was admitted. He can't use his hands, but he could bump something with his head. Do they make call lights that work that way? Yep. They sure do! There are even call lights you can puff air into! For a guy like him, it’s great that he has family there, but you can’t assume they will or can always be there. Investigate a call light solution that will work for him and use it. End rant. #Patientexpereience Oh yes — have I mentioned that my passion for patient experience is why I work with Patient Guide Solutions? 😃 #OurALSPatientExperience

One of the most valuable skills in hospice (and healthcare) is active listening. When spending time with patients and their families, focus on being present to their thoughts, feelings, and stories. Through attentive presence, empathy, and understanding, patients/families are able to express themselves freely and feel genuinely heard. Active listening not only fosters deeper connections but also provides comfort and solace during challenging times. Advanced Hospice Information Line: 412-710-7300
