Last week, we were at the #Tropentag conference, taking part in the side event Art in Science. It was interesting to see an initiative on the interception between art and science and see that there is still a way to go! We saw so much potential. Sometimes it can be thought that art and science belong to different worlds. But we can borrow elements from art to make science more accessible to others. Communicating scientific knowledge in an attractive, insightful, and accurate way 1. awakens interest in observing closely 2. encourages the engagement of our audience, and 3. facilitate the understanding of complex ideas For both, those doing science and those who are not involved in the scientific process but need to understand these scientific findings for decision-making. Did you visit the exhibition? What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments. ATSAF e.V.

How can bottom-up approaches to science and art democratise these fields and create new forms of artistic expression? 👾🧫🦠 Tomorrow TUE22 OCT from 5-7:30pm with my sister witch Arianna Forte 🔮 we will lead a workshop followed by a talk, diving deep into the ethical, philosophical, and creative implications of biohacking. Practical Workshop (1h30m) 🧪🧫 In this workshop, we will connect with bacteria, microbes, and other non-human entities with which we share our everyday existence. These invisible life forms, though often overlooked, are essential to our mutual survival and offer a unique lens through which to explore the boundaries between science and ritual. Through this event, we will introduce the theoretical foundations of magical materialism, which reimagines scientific practice as a form of ritualized inquiry. From here, we will move to hack traditional scientific protocols, applying biohacking techniques to the creation of a bacterial culture. This process transforms the lab into a space for collective spell-casting, where participants’ intentions and physical residues (such as skin cells or split) shape the outcome, merging ritual and scientific experimentation. ⚡️*workshop sold out*⚡️ Talk (Theoretical Exploration & Open Discussion) (1h): ✨ A reflection on the ideas introduced during the workshop, followed by an open forum for dialogue and questions. Talk open to all the public. Supported by: Index Freiraum Stipendium, Italian Council, SAE Greenhouse and LACAPSULA 👾

Citizen science for change At the beginning of April, the ECSA Conference 2024 was held as the major European event on citizen science. The event, organized by the ECSA - European Citizen Science Association, hosted talks, presentations, workshops and poster sessions on advances in the field of citizen science. Science For Change could not miss this special event, and we participated in no less than 9 sessions during the conference. For 3 days, Vienna became the European capital of citizen science. This year’s ECSA Conference, brought together experts in the field of citizen science, revolved around the theme of ‘change’. And when it comes to change, Science For Change has a lot to say, because it is in our DNA. One thing is clear: citizen science makes science advance in all fields of knowledge in an inclusive manner. But in order to advance, more resources are needed for projects to be sustainable and maintain their communities. Achieving tangible impacts takes time, and especially getting those impacts reflected in public policies that are more aligned with society’s needs to address complex challenges. At a time when digitalization and artificial intelligence are advancing by leaps and bounds, we cannot leave anyone behind. The opportunity is enormous, including the generation of new datasets for monitoring the UN Sustainable Development Goals, but institutional support for the practice must continue. So, how can we strengthen support for citizen science? It is time to reflect on the transformative impact of this practice, move beyond pilot projects, and exploit the results achieved so far. It is like a long-distance race, now we have the know-how, the knowledge and the methodologies, it is time to go one step further and continue betting on collaborative science. SFC will continue to support this type of collaborative research, and we hope that at the ECSA Conference in 2026, which will take place in Oulu (Finland), many of these questions will be answered. #CitizenScience #CollaborativeResearch Rosa Arias Blanca Guasch Balcells Diana Reinoso Botsho Mireia Ros Sònia Roura Valls Comunicació ambiental https://lnkd.in/d3nVa5QJ

Today I want to share two things with you. 1) In today's case, we see repeated segments in one image. I sound like a broken record, but this is not possible. 2) A Christmas gift for the scientific record: 4 retracted papers due to issues we flagged. H/T to Hoya camphorifolia for the notification, as always. The scientific record cannot defend itself, and we all rely on it when it comes to technological innovation and societal progress. Take your responsibility as a scientist and do whatever you can to preserve this wealth of knowledge. Humanity depends on it.

This year, the theme of the annual science event Lof der Geneeskunst was "The Consultation Room of the Future," hosted by Erasmus MC. Together with Hunted.Agency, we translated this topic into a playful, futuristic 3D teaser. The fresh look of the clip successfully attracted a wide audience to the Doelen Rotterdam to discuss the impact of science.
