🚨 A historical milestone was just achieved by the 22nd Air Refueling Wing. The first ever 45-hour nonstop, KC-46 westbound circumnavigation endurance flight was completed on June 29-July 1, named Project Magellan. The flight was done using Air Mobility Command’s (AMC) newest tanker aircraft. We are proud to be able to deliver the Chat Ops capabilities that AMC uses on a daily basis. 🤝 “In an era of Great Power Competition, crews need the ability to operate longer than they have in the past, and Project Magellan is the next step in getting AMC crews experience in the game-changing new construct that is MEO.” – Capt. Cody Donahue, 22nd Operations Group Executive Officer. We love seeing the hard work that all of these amazing teams put in come to fruition for our warfighters through these incredible feats. 🙌 Click here to read more about this incredible flight: https://lnkd.in/gTHug6rr #PlatformOne #MissionObsessed #Achievement #Flight #Airforce #Milestone #RecordBreaking #Military

Thanks to Harrison Ford, you're probably already aware of Air Force One, the Commander-In-Chief's office in the sky. But what you may not know is the name of the President's helicopter. 🚁 If that's the case, you've come to the right place! “Marine One” is the official call sign used to identify any United States Marine Corps helicopter carrying the President when he or she is on board. The specific helicopter used for presidential transport is the Sikorsky VH-60N White Hawk, which is a heavily modified variant of the UH-60 Blackhawk. 🦅 These helicopters are operated by the Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1), which is responsible for transporting the President, Vice President, and other VIPs. 🕴️ ❓ Dying for more FAQs? Excitement soared as the 908th Airlift Wing welcomed the first of its MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, after a hiatus of 726 days, marking a significant milestone for the Wing. Col. Christopher Lacouture, Commander of the 908th Airlift Wing, expressed his enthusiasm, highlighting this day as the dawn of a new era for the Wing. Col. Shane Devlin, Operations Group Commander, shared his anticipation, emphasizing the importance of resuming flight operations for crew training and readiness, paving the way for the Wing's role as the United States Air Force’s formal training unit for Grey Wolf aircrew. The MH-139A Grey Wolf, a modern variant based on the Leonardo AW139 helicopter, boasts enhanced speed, range, cabin size, and lifting capacity compared to its predecessor, the UH-1N Huey helicopters, aligning with the Air Force’s evolving needs. Col. Lacouture acknowledged the invaluable support from the local community and stakeholders during the Wing’s transition, underscoring the collective effort that made this milestone possible. This development signifies a leap forward in capabilities and readiness for the 908th Airlift Wing, strengthening its position as a vital asset within the U.S. Air Force’s operational framework. VMX-1 was established in 2016 when the United States Marine Corps moved their MV-22 Osprey operations from MCAS New River to MCAS Yuma. However, the squadron has always had a detachment of aircraft operating away from the main base. With the arrival of the first two CH-53K heavy lift helicopters, VMX-1 can now fully integrate all of its aircraft - the F-35, MV-22, AH-1, UH-1, and CH-53K - for large-scale training and testing. This is significant because it will allow VMX-1 to conduct more robust experimentation and demonstrations to shape the future of Marine Corps aviation. Having all the platforms together enables true integration, which is crucial for supporting Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations (EABO) concepts. The CH-53K is a major upgrade over the legacy CH-53E. It can carry up to 27,000 lbs of external cargo over 100 miles, a significant increase in lift capacity. The digital glass cockpit and fly-by-wire controls also reduce pilot workload. The Marine Corps plans to acquire 200 CH-53Ks in the coming years to replace its aging fleet of Super Stallions. VMX-1's testing and evaluation of the new helicopter will be critical in ensuring a smooth transition. Overall, the arrival of the CH-53K at MCAS Yuma marks an important milestone for VMX-1 and the future of Marine Corps aviation as it continues to evolve its capabilities for the high-end fight. #MarineCorps #MilitaryAviation #HeavyLift #USMC #FutureForce

💡 Aviation Word of The Day - TILTROTOR: 🔹A type of aircraft that combines the vertical takeoff and landing capabilities of a helicopter + the high-speed, long-range flight capabilities of a fixed-wing airplane 🔹Think of a tiltrotor aircraft as a mix between a helicopter and an airplane 🔹Like a helicopter, it can take off and land vertically. Once it’s in the air, it can change how it flies to be more like an airplane, which can go faster and farther 🔹Tiltrotor helicopters achieve this versatility by incorporating rotors that can be tilted from vertical to horizontal positions, allowing them to transition seamlessly between hovering like a helicopter and flying forward like an airplane 🔹The most well-known example of a tiltrotor helicopter is the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey, used by military forces for various missions including troop transport, cargo resupply, and search and rescue operations 🔹While tiltrotor helicopters are primarily used for military applications, there is ongoing research into their potential use in civilian roles such as air taxi services and emergency medical transport. #Tiltrotor #Helicopter #AircraftTechnology 🚁🔀🛩️
