For businesses trying to succeed in the world of defense innovation, learn to love CONOPs. Concepts of Operation are a key ingredient in any operational unit. They explain how a commander will employ forces to accomplish an operational goal. This includes the use of new capabilities, which includes those developed by the latest wave of defense tech companies. Why should you care about CONOPs? Because this is how operational units think through new capabilities and how to assess them. It is treated by others as the yardstick for measuring effectiveness. This helps a business think more about the problem they can solve than how to sell the solution they've built. CONOPs are also critical to identifying and engaging key stakeholders in these operational units. The process that generates a CONOPs involving all the key members of the "G Suite" (G2, G3, etc). This helps a business educate decision-makers up and down the chain, gaining insights about how to best position their solution. Who else cares about CONOPs? Program Offices care. They're responsible for acquiring and sustaining the capabilities described in them. They're also the ones who award the long-term contracts that businesses prize so highly. This is the gold standard for revenue for a defense business. Understanding and shaping CONOPs are an important aspect to any go-to-market strategy. As Simon Sinek says, start with why: Working with the Department of Defense is at times, challenging, especially with emerging technology. Yet, at the core the defense sector is actively seeking solutions to real-world problems—ones that impact national security, military readiness, and the lives of those who serve. I started PeakFusion because I believe the most innovative solutions deserve the best chance to address our nation’s needs. The recently closed AFWERX Open Topic cycle offered an exciting opportunity for innovators to collaborate with the #AirForce and tackle critical challenges. However, small businesses must recognize the competitive nature of this process and understand the importance of a robust funding strategy. #Startups and small businesses were invited to submit proposals aimed at enhancing the Air Force's capabilities in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, space operations, advanced materials, and human performance. Discussions indicate that the likelihood of being selected is around 1%, based on the volume of submissions and historical selection averages. Therefore, it is crucial for startups to develop a comprehensive #fundingstrategy that includes multiple opportunities to increase their chances of advancing their technology and capabilities. By diversifying their approach and exploring various funding avenues, small businesses can better position themselves for success in future AFWERX cycles and other #innovation programs.

I'm always amazed by the sheer amount of innovation companies introduce in RSA every year. The value they bring to the Cyber world is truly inspiring. As an entrepreneur, I find the Innovation Sandbox to be the most exciting event worth exploring. The finalists' stories are always intriguing. As a partnership professional, I'm interested in exploring how startups engage in partnerships and how early they recognize that their growth is associated with whom they partner with on the tech and business level. It's surprising how few put their partnership success, programs, and wins on their wall.
