While the emergence of wind and solar power is commendable for environmental preservation, their intermittent nature poses reliability challenges. Despite the push for greater adoption of green energy, ensuring energy reliability remains paramount, necessitating the continued presence of fossil fuel-based power generation. The below article confirms the construction of a new power plant located 60 miles East of Austin, poised to come online and supply enough energy to illuminate over 800,000 homes. Advanced Energy United's California Policy Lead, Edson Perez, attended the Assembly Budget Subcommittee #4 hearing discussing the #CAbudget and possibly cutting or delaying clean energy program funding. Read his thoughts below: “The future of the grid must be clean and distributed if we are going to meet our state policy goals and ensure a reliable grid that can withstand extreme weather events. In the short run, this means fully funding key clean distributed energy programs like the Distributed Electricity Backup Assets Program, Demand Side Grid Support program, and residential solar and storage programs to succeed. In the long run, it means passing policies that show the true long-term value of distributed resources, as well as supporting public and private entities driving their development and innovation.” 

Ariel Stavitsky is quoted in an article in New Project Media that discusses legislation passed recently in Oregon that provides an opt-in program for utility-scale standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS), the beginning of a state-level certification pathway for standalone BESS. According to Stavitsky, the bill provides additional opportunity for BESS developers to pursue state-level certification with the Oregon Energy Facility Siting Council but stops short of solving the primary permitting hurdle in Oregon—“the piecemeal” local land use authorization landscape for standalone BESS in the state.
