Having the human and then the oldest dog go first ‘rule’ keeps order. Everyone knows what to expect. This order is kept right on down to the youngest dog in the house. This keeps the oldest dog feeling safe and free from competition. It’s a pattern that everyone can count on happening every time. The others know when they will have their turn and that lowers their stress level. It's important to train in those boundaries so that everyone is calm and you can enjoy having dogs without having to scream at them and be upset because they aren't listening to you. You show them by action. You show them by being the leader and the boss. I even pull on the oldest dog's lead first when we are leaving the house. Once that dog is out the door, I pull on the second to eldest dog's lead, and so on. What happened with Dog Jogger Ashley and Indy. It was seriously terrifying, but thankfully they’re both okay! But seriously, folks, we need to address the problem of allowing your pup to roam freely in the car. It’s not safe, not at all. Let me explain it to you with 2 simple rules that could have prevented this: Rule #1: Leash on! Make sure to secure your doggo and keep them from jumping out or causing chaos in the backseat. (We don’t want any sudden stops or sharp turns to harm them either.) Rule #2: Windows up, but not completely closed. Look, we all enjoy some fresh air, but let’s prevent any unexpected doggy escapes, shall we? Your dog can get injured, and if they have a strong prey drive, a situation like this can occur - and yes, Bylaw is involved in this case.
