Continuing our series on archaeology and the planning process, this blog focuses on the predetermination investigations required by local planning authorities (LPAs) and county archaeologists. These investigations typically fall into two categories: documentary research and archaeological fieldwork. The goal of predetermination archaeological work is to provide the necessary background evidence for evaluating a planning application. Insufficient or lacking evidence can result in delays in the decision-making process. Including a sufficient amount of detailed archaeological information with planning applications can help save time and minimize the potential for future delays.
