Research Opportunity: Medication Adherence Among Heart Failure Patients in Sudan (2024)💊 We are currently seeking dedicated researchers to join our new project focused on "Medication Adherence Among Sudanese Heart Failure Patients Amidst War (2024)." 📊 Our research aims to explore the risk factors of medication non-adherence among heart failure patients in Sudan. We will also place a particular focus on how war and economic instability have affected the challenges of accessing and adhering to medications. We hypothesize that the combination of a failing economy and lack of access to medications has severely affected adherence rates and to investigate this, we will employ both quantitative and qualitative methods to examine the interplay between war, economic uncertainty, and medication adherence, hoping to uncover critical insights into the status of heart failure management during conflict. 💡 We are looking for team members who meet the following criteria: 1. 👁️🗨️Account from Gaza. By Dr. Ben Thomson.👁️🗨️ Dr. Ben Thomson, a Canadian nephrologist, has been volunteering in the illegally occupied West Bank and Gaza strip since 2013. He used to teach at the now destroyed Islamic University of Gaza where he helped create new medical courses. In October 2023, he was suspended at the university in Toronto, where he was employed, after he called out a Canadian Israel lobby for making dehumanising comments about Palestinians. Dr. Thomson who has recently come back from Gaza, shares his first-hand account of live in Gaza, as a medical professional and as a resident. The healthcare system in Gaza has completely collapsed, as the occupying forces have destroyed all facilities and killed medical personnel. People in Gaza are "living among the dead". Dr. Thomson details how the situation was in Gaza till before October 2023 and how it is today: - Prior to October 2023, there were only 2 nephrologists for a population of over 2 million people. In comparison, there are 20-30 specialists for a similarly sized population in a Canadian city. - Post October 2023, both the nephrologists have been killed by the occupying forces. - All 3 MRI machines and 4 out of 5 CT-scan machines have been destroyed. - The remaining CT-scan machine is awaiting repairs subject to Israel’s approval. - The only biopsy lab has been destroyed and the 2 pathologists who used to examine the biopsy results have been killed. - As a result, it is no longer possible to treat cancer in Gaza. But, how is everyday life in occupied Gaza? Especially, in the tent ‘cities’? Dr. Thomson recounts his experience: - There is a 24-hour surveillance by drones accompanied by a constant buzzing sound over one’s head.👁 - Every night there are explosions and uninterrupted sleep is not possible.💥 - Water is scarce with each person getting 3 litres or less per day.🚰 - For every 800-1000 people, there is just one open toilet without any privacy barriers or nighttime lighting.🚾 - Most people are lucky to get even 1 meal day and oftentimes, they go without any meal a day.🥘 Despite the appalling conditions and the omnipresent ruins, Dr. Thomson is optimistic that one day there will be a functioning healthcare system in Gaza. Another publication from my PhD Thesis. In this study, we recruited 1,126 health professionals from all levels of care in Ghana. we found that LHIMS improved productivity, patient data gathering, sharing of patient information among service providers, care continuity, data exchange among facilities, decision-making, and coordination/organization of care. Also, health professionals’ work experience, educational qualification, and training status were statistically significant predictors of effective use of the LHIMS at the multivariate level. Age and professional type were statistically significant only at the bivariate level.

Role of hypnotherapy in medicine Hypnosis has been used as an adjunct to medical practice (or as a stand-alone medical treatment) for centuries, but only in the last decades have medical applications of hypnosis been extensively researched. As a result of scientific studies proving that hypnosis can be just as effective (or sometimes even superior) to many standard treatment procedures. In 1958 the American Medical Association officially approved teaching of medical hypnosis in medical schools. The American Psychological Association did the same in 1960 for the field of psychology. The National Institute of Health technology assessment panel has recognized hypnosis in the treatment of a variety of disorders and recommends its integration into medical practice. Many hospitals and medical centers throughout the US now offer hypnosis to their patients in operating rooms, pain clinics, amputee clinics, burn units, cancer centers, GI departments, labor and delivery units, weight loss clinics, addiction treatment centers, integrative medicine and mental health clinics. Examples of hospitals offering hypnotherapy services are: Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, Stanford University Hospital and Stanford Health Care clinics in California, Mount Sinai Beth Israel in New York, Mercy Hospitals in Missouri and University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. ⚕️A solemnly affirmed leadership is needed to achieve the Universal Health Coverage by 2030 in Africa. Putting the human resources (in quantity as well as in quality) at the centre to achieve the target. 🌍 Africa and Southeast Asia are home to only 12% of the global surgical specialists ( surgeons, anesthesiologists and obstetricians), despite harboring a third of the world's population. 👩🏿⚕️ Surgeons specialist density in africa is only 0,7 per 1000, 000 population; a minimun density of 20 per 100.000 ( lancet commission 2025 on Global Surgery) is considered necessary to tackle the burden of surgical problems. ↔️ The gap is huge and there is a critical need for urgent, innovative and funded interventions in the majority of sub-saharan Africa countries. #HealthWorkers #Africa #Data

Despite financial constraints, you can find happiness and achieve international competence, provided you are determined and work hard. However, I don't want to deceive myself or anyone else. We are not isolated; we are affected by everything happening in the country. It pains me to see how quickly things are deteriorating in Ethiopia. Given the economic crises and escalating security concerns, it is hard for me to foresee a promising future. I know everyone is concerned, but most of us are unsure how to contribute positively to reversing the frightening course our country is on.
