45 years ago today, on July 1, 1979, Sony revolutionized portable music with the release of the original Walkman TPS-L2 in Japan. This compact, lightweight cassette player allowed people to enjoy stereo music on the go for the first time. The Walkman quickly gained global popularity, with versions released under different names like "Sound-about" in the U.S. and "Freestyle" in Australia and Sweden. By the early 1980s, the iconic "Walkman" name had caught on worldwide. Over the next decade, Sony rapidly expanded the Walkman lineup, introducing models with features like Dolby noise reduction, auto-reverse, remote control, and rechargeable batteries. By 1989, Sony had sold 50 million Walkmans in the U.S. and 46% of the market in Japan. The Walkman brand eventually encompassed portable players for cassettes, CDs, MiniDiscs, and digital audio formats. But the classic cassette Walkman remained popular, with Sony producing around 200 million units before ending cassette player manufacturing in 2010. #audiovisual #audio #sony #engineering #technology #technologies #cd #minidiscs #audioformats #sound #walkman #japan #musci #stereo

Good enough is getting worse I've been lucky enough to work alongside some of the greatest audio engineers working at some of the top recording studios in the world. What these people can do with sound is quite astonishing. Even more so as the use of multi-channel spatial audio becomes more popular. The gap between the studio experience and what is delivered to the listener is getting bigger. Very few people get to hear anything close to what the original artist intended, which is a shame. One way to deal with this, is for the audio engineer to make adjustments so that it doesn't sound too bad on typical low-cost headphones. This was highlighted recently in this article: https://lnkd.in/gPaWADz9 Whether we are listening to music in the car, on a portable Bluetooth speaker or on headphones or earbuds, there is a lot we can do to enhance the experience. We don't have to be satisfied with the latest variant of good enough. Your ears deserve better. #Sonical #Headphone3 #CosmOS #UseYourEars #PersonalisedSound

JBL is an American audio equipment manufacturer[1] headquartered in Los Angeles, California, United States. JBL serves the home and professional market. The professional market includes studios, installed/tour/portable sound, music production, DJ, and cinema markets. The home market includes high-end home amplification/speakers/headphones as well as high-end car audio. JBL is owned by Harman International, itself a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics. Lansing and his business partner Ken Decker started a company in 1927 in Los Angeles, manufacturing six- and eight-inch speaker drivers for radio consoles and radio sets. The firm was named Lansing Manufacturing Company, from March 1, 1927.[2] In 1933, head of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) sound department, Douglas Shearer, dissatisfied with the loudspeakers of Western Electric and RCA, decided to develop his own. #snsinstitution #snsdesignthinkers #designthinkers
