"Stop talking about it and do something" - Tanya Whitehouse OAM.🗣️✨ This is me doing what I can, with what I have, where I am to take action against harassment. 🌍 Did you know: 79% of victims say it improved the situation when a bystander intervened. 👥🛡️ Yet, only 25% of victims of harassment said someone helped. 🆘 In fact, 86% of us do not know what to do when we witness it happening (Ipsos and L'Oreal Paris, 2019). 🤷♂️🚫 I am a Registered Nurse, and it has been part of my job to identify and report any suspicions of abuse and/or neglect involving children, elderly, and in domestic violence. I have seen many harassment incidents both in and outside of my professional role. 🏥🔍 I am running a free lunchtime webinar, driven by my strong call to action. Let me share practical insight into actions that everyone and anyone can safely adopt to discourage harassment and support victims. 🌟 An Overview of Second Chance Month and its Economic Benefits 🌟 #WorkforceWednesday April is recognized as Second Chance Month by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). The promotion of Second Chance Month helps stakeholders across the country recognize the importance of supporting the safe and successful reentry of young ex-offenders into the community. The Second Chance Business Coalition comprises private-sector firms committed to expanding second chance hiring. In a study with @SHRM, they noted that: 📈85% of individuals with criminal records perform the same as, or better than, employees without criminal records. 🏆82% of second chance employees bring value to their organization as high as, or higher than, that of workers without records. 🤩66% of employees would be proud to work for an organization that offered training, guidance, or mentorship opportunities to people with criminal records to facilitate their return to work. Providing people with a criminal background a second chance at employment can reduce repeated criminal activities, provide stability to local communities, and independently support their family. Cannot emphasise the importance of taking the time needed to ensure lived experience contributions are wrapped in support and safety. From requesting training surveys or program/survey evaluation input to face to face presence at meetings - a validated, evidenced based, lived experience informed approach is the starting point. And name how and who informs your framework. Our stories are no longer available for business benefit or a tokenised symbol of allyship.

New article! Very excited to publish this study in Men and Masculinities. The article analyzes how race and class inform how boys respond to harassment awareness training programs. It shows how such audiences might fail to see street harassment as ‘their’ problem (therefore deflecting responsibility for sexual violence). As we observe Sexual Assault Awareness Month, it is imperative that we collectively recognize the gravity of this issue and take proactive steps to address it. Sexual assault is a pervasive and devastating crime that has long-lasting effects on survivors, families, and communities. Sexual assault can occur not only at home but also in the workplace. According to a recent study, approximately 1 in 3 women have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace. This statistic is alarming and highlights the need for organizations to prioritize creating safe and inclusive environments for all employees and to foster a culture of respect and consent, with zero tolerance for any form of sexual misconduct. Furthermore, we must challenge societal norms that perpetuate harmful attitudes and behaviors. By engaging in open dialogues, raising awareness, and promoting education, we can work toward dismantling the stigma surrounding sexual assault and empowering survivors to speak out without fear of judgment or retaliation. This month, let's renew our commitment to standing up against sexual violence in all its forms. We are deeply saddened and shocked by the recent unrest and racist violence seen across the country since the heartbreaking events in Southport last week. Racism and prejudice towards minority groups undermine the very purpose of our work or risk the safety and wellbeing of our customers and colleagues. Such actions have no place in our communities, and we will take action against perpetrators. We know the unrest is causing fear and concern. When girls are empowered, they are better equipped to recognize and respond to inappropriate behavior, assert their boundaries, and seek help if needed. Supporting and protecting girls means creating safe spaces where they feel comfortable expressing themselves without fear of judgment or harm. It involves educating them about consent, healthy relationships, and their rights. It also means fostering a culture of respect and accountability, where perpetrators are held responsible for their actions and survivors are believed and supported. Social media can play a significant role in this by amplifying awareness, providing resources, and facilitating conversations about consent, boundaries, and sexual assault prevention. It's essential to use these platforms responsibly, promoting positive messages and advocating for change.
