Did you know that this week (May-15) was International Product Day? As a Product Leader, people often ask me how I got started in this field. It all began with building a strong foundation in software development and project management. After honing my technical and leadership skills and working closely with customers, my business acumen and strategic thinking grew. When my first offer to become a product manager came along, I refused it due to bad timing. I knew I needed to be consistent and wait for the right opportunity that aligned with my career goals. When the second offer came along, I seized it. Here are my five tips for aspiring product managers: * Continuously develop your technical skills. Never stop! * Gain a deep understanding of business strategy * Build a strong professional network. I recently came across a blog that explores "What a product manager does?", "How to become a product manager?" but the real eye-opener for me was a particular insight from the author. Did you know that if you’re considering a career in product management, there isn’t a strict path to follow or a specialized degree you must have? Astonishingly, more than 50% of product managers have backgrounds in non-product roles! The real key? Leadership, creativity, and a relentless willingness to learn. As an aspiring product manager, this was an inspiring revelation for me. It’s not about where you start; it’s about the skills you develop along the way. A GENTLE REMINDER FOR ALL THE PRODUCT MANAGERS OUT THERE "The ambiguity of the product management role is near to its essence." As product managers/owners/officers, we often find ourselves in a space filled with uncertainty and ambiguity. This isn't a flaw; it's a feature. The very nature of our role requires us to navigate through undefined territories, bridging gaps between different departments, and aligning diverse perspectives towards a common goal. Embracing this ambiguity allows us to be adaptable, innovative, and proactive in solving complex problems. It's in these gray areas that we find opportunities to define clear strategies, drive product vision, and ultimately create value. Today we had the final week of our first Product Leadership cohort at Gigantic 🎉 The past 14 weeks with this group have been nothing short of energizing. My favorite part has been the way we have shared perspectives and experiences to help each other out. During our weekly mentorship sessions, we synthesized and discussed the content created by Ben Foster Rajesh Nerlikar David Jesse Sara Bial Zalowitz We then shared how to best implement the frameworks, tools, and practical tips learned. I've learned so much from everyone's point of view as a mentor, facilitating the conversations. We covered aspects such as: Role: What makes a successful product leader Framing: determining metrics that matter Results: putting metrics to use, e.g., key outcome pyramids Vision: inspiration and alignment Strategy: setting course Planning: bringing vision to life Roadmapping: prioritizing for focus and impact Execution: successful delivery towards impact Organization: structuring, hiring, and onboarding People: developing and retaining a high-performing team Influence: collaboration, communication, and trust Time management: balancing demands for leverage Troubleshooting: managing problems and disconnects Meeting every week has been an excellent forcing function for us to be present and engage. I am impressed by the improvement in their confidence, structured approach, and sense of conviction.
