In this video I am talking about something that happened with me on a cruise. I have some questions for you below. I use intermediate English, so you can test your level! Attention to some expressions to use when you want to check your understanding. And, at the end, a word in the context of traveling that can be easily misunderstood. 1. Last week my family and I were traveling for spring break, dining at a restaurant, when I observed the table next to us trying to order. The waiter spoke Italian and English, but the diners didn't seem to know either of those languages. It took a good 10 or so minutes for them to order, but the waiter was cool as ever using a lot of body language, pointing at pictures and using animated expressions to articulate menu items so that the diners felt a level of comfort ordering their food. His empathy was admirable and it got me thinking - 𝙬𝙝𝙮 𝙘𝙖𝙣'𝙩 𝙬𝙚 𝙖𝙡𝙬𝙖𝙮𝙨 𝙥𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙚𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙮 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙬𝙚'𝙧𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨? When you're trying to talk to someone who doesn't speak the same native language, you're more 𝙥𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩, you're more 𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜, and you 𝙩𝙧𝙮 𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙧 to find common ground so that you both can understand each other. Sure, we have Google translate to help us out in a bind, but for the most part we're more willing to put in the effort and use empathy to find that human connection of understanding. Even though we may speak the same language with those we interact with every day, we should always remember to put in the effort, practice patience, and be forgiving. We might find that understanding each other will be a little easier if we embrace some of these beliefs.
