As the woke saga continues and more CEOs begin to realize their policies are misaligned with customers, many are missing the point. Tractor Supply has succumbed to the criticism of its recently abandoned DEI policies focused on diversity and sustainability and taking a hit from customers. Which emphasizes the importance of 1. Knowing your customer 2. Putting the business first The question is, did Tractor Supply determine whether or not the individuals sharing their opinions about their diversity and sustainability "values" were actual customers *before* they made the decision? That would cover both points and ensure they aren't making impulsive but informed decisions. Otherwise, you could end up where they are now. Some praise the decision, while others feel manipulated, leading to another question: what percentage feels manipulated? And is it large enough to affect revenue, reputation and retention? I'm confident in saying that at least one of the 3Rs has been negatively impacted by the decision. The president of the National Black Farmers Association has personally asked to speak to Tractor Supply's CEO, and I know it's not to talk about their draft picks. This is the opposite of what any leader should want to happen. If this subject or situation strikes a nerve or if you're questioning your DEI, let's talk. There's a good chance your instincts are right. Tractor Supply cuts diversity efforts and Black farmers association fights back. If I were #HomeDepot CEO, or another equipment supplier, I would be calling on this association with my DEI record and a request for their endorsement. In fact, if you are a CDO who wants to show business impact, here's an easy way to do it. Find competitors in your industry backing out of DEI commitments due to backlash fears, lack of leadership understanding, etc. Next find which customer group they have who feels disenchanted with your competitors decisions, then provide your leadership and sales with colleral on your continuing efforts in DEI and advise them to go after the unhappy clients. (Like the above association).
