A fabulous art installation and concept (in the brilliant MONA), illuminating a pressing current conundrum. Can contemporary exclusion address (and meaningfully illuminate) past inequality without perpetuating further undue discrimination? You could say yes, it’s a temporary fix to balance the scales. Or you could argue it’s just more of the same old problem, in a new package. Maybe the sweet spot? A little exclusion, done right, and with an expiration date. Meanwhile, Mona - Museum of Old and New Art gets more (and deserved) attention. A fabulous place to go. (And while you're in Hobart, just take the time and go over to Bruny Island, sit down at Get Shucked, and have the freshest and best oysters you'll eat in your life.) #equalityforall #ethicalquestions #artandjustice #balancingthepast #socialjusticeconversation #thoughtfuldiscourse #inclusionmatters #openhearteddebate #artwithmeaning #genderequality https://lnkd.in/etkqMkki

Vice President - Global Art Advisory | Private Sales | Evangelising appreciation of the arts | Bullish on art NFTs
The Art Basel and UBS Art Market Report 2024 has been released, revealing some key trends and developments in the global art market. I listened to Dr. Clare McAndrew, Art Economics and Noah Horowitz, Art Basel share their expert opinion on the report last evening, and here are my key takeaways. Despite a 4% decrease in global art market sales, to USD 65 billion from the previous year, this figure is still higher than pre-pandemic levels. Online sales have increased by 7% reaching a total of USD 11.8 billion, representing about 18% of the total market value. With regards to economies and strategic locations, the US remains the largest art market, accounting for 42% of total sales, while China has surpassed the UK to become the second-largest art market with a 9% growth. Dealers and auction houses are facing similar challenges. While younger galleries are experiencing an increase in sales of works under USD 50,000; sales of artworks valued at USD 10 million and above have slowly declined this year. On the other hand, public auction sales have fallen by 7% to USD 25 billion, although private sales have increased by 2% globally. Overall, the art market and its trends show a positive trajectory towards 2024-25, with the rise of art as an alternative asset class and strategies for portfolio diversification. #artmarket #globalartmarketreport #ubsart #artbasel

Responsible acquisition practices can empower collectors to contribute actively to the protection of global cultural heritage. By prioritising preservation of our shared human history, over the desire to acquire, collectors wield significant influence in fostering an ethical art market. #duediligence #collecting #artcollector #artcollection #artadvisory

Depicting slavery has never been a straightforward proposition. Racism, unbridled capitalism, parochial politics, colonialism, and war all curdle into the explanation (to which I would add the transcendent notion of 'evil'). Here is an assessment of how two exhibitions treat the subject in different ways, and what is lost sight of in the process. https://lnkd.in/g4EFCrNk
