ARTICLE OF THE WEEK | “Recovery of the Real Fábrica de Paños de Brihuega, Guadalajara” by Juan de Dios de la Hoz Martínez “The most appropriate methodology for intervening in this type of historical projects is always based on a prior exhaustive process of historical research, followed by field work necessary to draw up the planimetric survey and the pathological study. The main goal of this restoration was to bring back the identity of the building and to recover the rich spaces that had disappeared under the rubble. Thus, the work carried out was based on reconstruction and not on demolition, on the use of the same constructive systems and traditional materials found in the buildings, and on the integration of the archeological remains that appeared during the works, since they are also part of the history of the building.” Read the article: https://lnkd.in/dv_hs-KC #traditionalbuilding #traditionalarchitecture #buildingtrades #heritage #heritagepreservation #restoration Juan de Dios de la Hoz Martinez

It is extremely difficult to renovate/update a building or home in historic or conservation district and you can forget about building something new. Creating more of these districts guarantees a tax base too small to pay for a growing city's need. The buildings that we should be protecting are those that are eligible for the National Register (criteria below): Age and Integrity: Must be at least 50 years old and retain original features showing its historical significance. Significance: Needs to be significantly linked to American history, architecture, archeology, engineering, or culture in ways such as: ▪ Tied to important historical events. ▪ Connected to significant people. ▪ A great example of a type of construction, architecture, or the work of a master. ▪ Can provide important historical or prehistorical information. Exceptions: Properties that normally wouldn’t qualify but are exceptionally significant can be eligible. Exclusions: Generally, certain properties like cemeteries, birthplaces, and religious buildings aren’t eligible unless they have exceptional importance.

There is another one of those posts about architectural 'beauty' doing the rounds, this time favorably comparing a new neo-Georgian reconstruction/pastiche with the (formerly) Grade II listed 1950s modernist house it replaced. To me this seems troubling; surely there is a role for buildings archaeologists in understanding the social and cultural context of buildings to provide for better quality, and, indeed more 'beautiful' structures? What is it that would make a buildings archaeological approach distinctive and how would a replacement have turned out if that had been used?

FASCINATING!! This intriguing stone block found at the Priene archaeological site in Turkey displays what appears to be precise, machine-like cuts, stirring curiosity about ancient construction techniques. How could such exact incisions have been achieved with the tools available over 2,000 years ago? This discovery challenges our understanding of historical technology and craftsmanship. What skills did the ancient builders possess, and what might this tell us about their capabilities and innovations?

🏛️ The Roman aqueducts stand as a monumental achievement in the history of engineering. These incredible structures represented the pinnacle of water transport technology in the ancient world. 🌊 Over 200 aqueducts were constructed across the Roman Empire, with eleven in Rome alone. By the end of the first century A.D., Roman innovation enabled the storage of nearly one million cubic meters of drinking water daily in the city – nearly a thousand liters per person. #engineering #structuralengineering #CivilEngineering #aqueduct

A recent article on the BBC website highlighted the destruction of a Roman Villa in a housing development in the north east of England. Associated social media posts reported a petition has been started to save the site. But on reading of the article, it is obvious that the developers, miller homes and Taylor Wimpey, both of whom have funded hundreds of thousands of pounds of developer led archaeology and research, are working to a planning condition, have worked with local planners including the county archaeologist, and have employed a professional arch company, who are advised by historic England, to evaluate and excavate the site in advance of development. The real story here? Professional house builders work with the county archaeologist and commercial archaeology company to do good job! Not quite as catchy a headline. Perhaps the only real issue here is a lack of an early press release detailing results (but there are lots of reasons to keep information until the site is better understood). As an industry we appreciate the value of the press, and anyone who saw interest in archaeology soar after the Time Team, first aired will know this. But we must ensure that these stories don’t occur! https://lnkd.in/eRBvyvAx
